External Communications Senior Manager – Hybrid
POSITION LOCATION: Hybrid. Under the direction of the Senior Director of Strategic Communications, the External Communications Senior Manager oversees the strategic execution of external communications for Boston Medical Center Health System (BMC Health System) and is responsible for advancing media relations, thought leadership, and conference and forum engagement that directly promotes and benefits BMC Health System’s profile and reputation.
The External Communications Senior Manager will work with executive and clinical leadership, providers, and other stakeholders across the health system to develop and implement a broad, proactive external communications strategy and tactics in support of BMC Health System’s strategic goals, with a focus on high-priority initiatives and audiences and externally trending opportunities.
The External Communications Senior Manager will also work closely with Communications leaders to advance strategic initiatives and support issues management. All engagements should underscore BMC Health System’s approach to modeling a transformational kind of excellence in healthcare where clinical and operational innovation meets health equity and access.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES
Proactively identifies and develops breakthrough opportunities in collaboration with senior administrators and clinicians to draw attention to BMC Health System’s key focus areas.
Provide executive communications support for strategic messaging, speaking opportunities, and conference management.
Develops proactive media relations plans and manages media inquiries, ensuring opportunities align with BMC Health System strategies and objectives.
Stays abreast of national and local health news and communications trends to forecast reputational headwinds and tailwinds and keep system leaders informed.
Ensures value-consistent, quality, and compelling news and thought leadership content, including press releases, feature articles, op-eds, podcasts, blogs, speaker remarks, and social media posts.
Works closely with leaders across BMC Health System hospitals, WellSense Health Plan, Clearway Health, Oakwell, Boston HealthNet, and other entities to identify reputational opportunities and manage risks.
Serves as spokesperson across BMC Health System to manage reputational risks and respond to crisis situations.
Identifies and develops spokespeople who can best represent BMC Health System in the media and external events, lead media training, and support speaking engagements.
Oversee emergency communications and incident response media relations support for BMC Health System.
Directly supervise a Communications Specialist. Assign work, performance manage, and promote professional development.
Focus on driving BMC Health System’s key initiatives with metrics and reporting.

REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree required, and a minimum of ten years of external communications, media management, and related operational experience.
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Master’s degree preferred. At least five years of strategic planning and management of a team is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Proven ability to translate a strategic plan into tactical excellence. Capable of communications program development, implementation, metrics, and evaluation. Must be highly organized self-started, able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced and complex organizational environment. Proficient in standard client software in a healthcare office setting (i.e., MS Word, Excel, Access, Web Browsers, etc.).
Compensation Range
Compensation Range: $97,500.00- $141,500.00 This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. However, our approach to determining base pay is comprehensive, and a broad range of factors is considered when making an offer. In addition, BMCHS offers generous total compensation that includes, but is not limited to, benefits (medical, dental, vision, pharmacy), discretionary annual bonuses and merit increases, Flexible Spending Accounts, 403(b) savings matches, paid time off, career advancement opportunities, and resources to support employee and family well-being.
