Job Function

Under the direction of senior design professionals, the designer performs design, project engineering, project management, and general engineering duties to support large customer service requests, third‑party telecommunications attachment requests, and capital construction programs for Hawaiian Electric.
Essential Functions

Plan and conduct work requiring independent judgment in evaluating, selecting, and adapting standard techniques and procedures. Devise new approaches to encountered problems.
Perform most assignments independently with general results guidance; receive technical guidance on unusual or complex problems; obtain supervisory approval on proposed plans.
Prepare plans, layouts, design calculations, and related engineering work in accordance with company standards, codes, ordinances, and regulations. Develop improved techniques and procedures for equipment, materials, and methods.
Execute project engineering and management functions on large customer service requests and major capital projects. Coordinate with city, county, state, and federal agencies on rules, regulations, and permits.
Meet with customers and/or consultants to discuss service requirement matters. Review and approve customer electrical plans for conformance with company standards and the NEC.
Conduct engineering studies, review 3rd‑party telecommunication attachment designs, and prepare reports or comment on technical reports prepared by others.
Prepare requests for proposals, evaluate proposals, and make recommendations. Direct design efforts by consultants and verify their designs.
Develop project schedules and cost estimates for capital budgeting. Prepare material, equipment, and construction specifications for bids and evaluate proposals for purchase.
Serve as technical consultant to customer planners and designers. Perform computations such as short‑circuit current, overcurrent relay, fuse coordination, motor starting, voltage drop, and customer demand load. Assist with application of the company tariff, engineering standards, and NEC.
Conduct field inspections to verify conditions and compliance, then prepare findings reports.
Participate in company emergency response activities as assigned.
Understand and uphold company policies, mission, vision, values, and cultural dimensions.
Basic Qualifications

Knowledge Requirements

Minimum 5 years relevant engineering experience in power engineering design, project engineering, and project management.
In-depth knowledge of company tariff, Electrical Service Installation Manual, EUSERC, NESC, and 3rd‑party telecommunications attachment processes.
Working knowledge of personal computer software (spreadsheets, word processing) and willingness to learn additional tools.
Familiarity with city, county, state, and federal laws, regulations, and procedures.
Knowledge of Hawaiian Electric’s capital and O&M budget procedures.
Desirable: business writing, accounting, economics, business law, finance, LEAN principles, and SafeStart principles.

Skills Requirements

Demonstrated leadership, effective written, oral, and listening communication, and interpersonal skills to work with all levels of the company and external stakeholders.
Ability to conceptualize new ideas quickly and remain flexible in a demanding environment.
Proficiency in handling confrontational, difficult, or sensitive issues with professionalism, tact, courtesy, and discretion.
In-depth analytical and administrative skills for preparing and monitoring project requirements and resolving cost/time constraints.
Must qualify for a State of Hawaii driver’s license.

Experience Requirements

Senior Level: 10+ years of utility distribution, transmission, or customer service electrical design experience, or a Bachelor of Science Engineering degree (or equivalent) plus five years of experience.
Intermediate Level: 3–5 years of utility distribution, transmission, or customer service design experience, or an Associate’s degree in electrical technology (or equivalent).
