Position Summary

The Policy Director is a highly skilled, experienced professional responsible for advising Walmart, Inc., and its leadership on public policy issues at all levels of government. This role is well‑suited for individuals with strong public policy experience and the ability to lead on complex, evolving issues. Areas of focus may include e-commerce and online marketplaces, data privacy and security, artificial intelligence, biometrics, and other emerging technologies. Familiarity with competition policy and intellectual property protections is a plus. Candidates with backgrounds in these or related policy domains — and the ability to rapidly gain fluency in new issue areas and translate complex topics into actionable strategies — are encouraged to apply.

Walmart’s Global Public Policy (GPP) team is responsible for identifying risks and opportunities in the public policy space with the goals of maintaining and expanding the company’s license to operate; creating opportunity for our 2.1million associates; serving millions of customers across the globe; and building shared value in the communities we serve.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership in defined public policy areas of strategic interest to Walmart and its stakeholders.
  • Use subject‑matter expertise as a counselor to the business, engage in complex public policy analysis, and work with a range of internal and external stakeholders to shape strategic priorities.
  • Think critically and act decisively while maintaining flexibility to shift focus across a multitude of issues that can impact local communities or have national or global scope.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, business partners, policymakers, and the public, working closely with Walmart’s government affairs and communications teams.
  • Operate independently and collaboratively, demonstrating sound judgment, creativity, practicality, and urgency.

What You’ll Do

  • Identify Walmart’s public policy priorities within your area(s) of expertise and through collaboration in peer‑owned areas.
  • Devise appropriate strategic plans to address Walmart’s public policy priorities, and work with colleagues to execute effective tactics.
  • Inform, advise, and recommend courses of action to internal business partners regarding Walmart’s public policy priorities.
  • Monitor and analyze legislation, high‑level administrative or regulatory activity, and other government‑led initiatives at all levels that could potentially impact Walmart, its associates, or its customers.
  • Build and manage relationships with external trade and industry associations, NGOs, public policy experts, subject‑matter experts, and other stakeholders.
  • Leverage stakeholder relationships to advance Walmart’s policy priorities and promote a better understanding of Walmart’s role in society.
  • Engage in public policy research with internal and external partners.
  • Build networks across internal business functions to develop accurate and meaningful public policy positions and oversee appropriate responses to external factors.

What You’ll Bring

  • 8+ years of applied public policy experience with demonstrated success in government affairs or related advocacy fields; corporate experience is a plus.
  • Bachelor’s degree in government/political science, economics, international affairs, business, or a related field.
  • Deep understanding of policymaking processes at the state/local, federal, and/or global level and how to leverage private sector influence.
  • Ability to anticipate and react quickly to complex public policy problems.
  • Skill in identifying appropriate courses of action and working with teams to implement effective solutions.
  • Comfort in directly counseling senior leaders on policy issues and strategy.
  • Experience working in matrixed environments with ability to navigate complex organizations and spark collaboration across teams and departments.
  • Experience cultivating and managing stakeholder relationships with trust and integrity.

Compensation

The annual salary range for this position is $110,000.00–$220,000.00, with additional compensation including annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include stock.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Political Science, or a related field and 5years of experience managing projects or campaigns in politics, public affairs, or a related field.
  • Alternatively, 7years of experience managing projects or campaigns in politics, public affairs, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in government relations, lobbying, or media relations.
