Job Description
Primary Purpose: Direct and manage the overall theatre program for the campus. Provide students with opportunities to participate in extracurricular theatre activities and ensure compliance with state, UIL, TETA, ITS, and district requirements. Plan and administer theatre activities in accordance with campus and district expectations. Provide students opportunities to achieve district, region, state, and national recognition. Oversee operations and use of the campus performance arts center.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university
- Valid Texas teaching certificate
- Knowledge of overall operation of a theatre program
- Ability to manage budget and personnel
- Knowledge of state, UIL, TETA, and ITS policies governing theatre activities
- Ability to interpret policy, procedures, and data
- Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills
- Three years of teaching and theatre directing/technical experience
- Citizenship, residency, or work visa required
Major Responsibilities and Duties
- Direct high school theatre students in acting, costuming, make-up, set design, lighting, sound, technical, and directing.
- Establish performance/participation requirements, enforce academic requirements, and verify each student’s eligibility.
- Provide student participation at extracurricular theatre events, including UIL, TETA, and ITS competitions.
- Arrange transportation, lodging, and meals for out-of-town events.
- Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rules, UIL, TETA, ITS, and local school board policy.
- Use evaluative findings to determine program effectiveness and ensure continuous renewal responsive to student needs.
- Recommend policies to improve the program.
- Ensure programs are cost effective and funds are managed wisely.
- Attend all professional and staff meetings as requested.
- Compile budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.
- Coordinate fundraising activities and manage funds.
- Maintain inventory of all fixed assets within the department.
- Oversee cleaning, repairing, and storing of all theatre equipment, props, costume components, etc.
- Develop and implement plans for the theatre program with written evidence of preparation.
- Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences.
- Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations, including the established Northwest ISD curriculum.
- Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of student learning styles and needs.
- Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
- Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
- Apply and enforce student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct, student handbook, and theatre handbook.
- Accompany and supervise on all trips.
- Take necessary precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Maintain open communication with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
- Maintain professional relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
- Promote campus, district, and community awareness of theatre activities and performances.
- Provide supervisory leadership and management to all component groups within the theatre program.
- Provide supervisory leadership and guidance for "cluster" junior high theatre programs.
- Select, supervise, and train students to operate theatre equipment for NISD events and fine arts activities.
- Actively participate in district theatre performance opportunities, as required.
- Other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Student aides and support staff (student).
Equipment Used
Personal computer, copier, fax machine, specialized equipment related to the assigned position.
Working Conditions
Position requires frequent district and occasional statewide travel, irregular hours, evening and weekend work, exposure to weather conditions, bending, stooping, lifting, pushing, pulling, twisting, keyboarding, and overhead reaching.
Position Type and Salary
Position Type: Full-Time
Salary: $63,976.40 to $85,449.60 per year.
