National Jewish Health is seeking a National Director, Development Communications to lead our dynamic, mission‑driven Development Communications Team. National Jewish Health is known worldwide for treatment of patients with respiratory, cardiac, immune and related disorders, and for groundbreaking medical research. Founded in 1899 as a nonprofit hospital, we remain the only facility in the world dedicated exclusively to these disorders.

If you’re a talented leader who can inspire teams and create compelling content for a diverse audience, we need you on our team. You will oversee staff writers and collaborate across the institution to develop a wide range of projects, including special event scripts and publicity, newsletter articles, donor communications, social media posts, proposals seeking support for critical research programs, and more.

Position Summary

Responsible for forming and implementing the Development department’s national communication strategies that reflect National Jewish Health’s strategic plans, institutional priorities, audience affinities and brand identities across the United States. Enhance the Development department’s visibility and reputation nationwide by utilizing all media channels.

Essential Duties

  • Manages and develops an effective staff: provides communication, leadership, guidance, and resources; determines staff qualifications and competency; recruits, interviews, selects, hires, trains, mentors, evaluates, coaches, counsels, disciplines, and rewards; establishes and monitors staff safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Create strategic communication objectives focused on goals of major gifts, campaign, events, annual fund and planned giving areas; work with teams to develop implementation plans and provide evaluation, adjusting course as needed.
  • Develop all collateral support for the strategic initiatives of the Development program.
  • Serve as the Development Department’s national brand leader, ensuring that the department’s communications align with institutional brand strategy and standards across the country.
  • Oversee the development and production of donor/disease‑specific proposals and reports; maintain materials essential to creating these documents; oversee writing and reviewing grant proposals.
  • Oversee collateral production, including letters, speeches, proposals and reports for the President and CEO, Board of Directors, faculty and staff representatives.
  • Create strategy for and oversee production of Development social media and website content.
  • Collaborate with Public Affairs and Marketing Departments to share information, prevent duplication of effort, and help brand National Jewish Health with strong institutionally approved messages.

Travel

Minimal travel may be required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Master’s Degree in journalism or related field required.
  • Work Experience: Minimum of seven (7) years of recent and related professional writing experience, including three (3) years of management experience. Portfolio must include published materials reflecting experience in one or more of the following areas: public relations, medical reporting, fundraising, grant writing, marketing or persuasive writing.
  • Special Training, Certification or Licensure: None.

Salary Range

$110,000 - $135,000
