Overview
The New York State Institute for Basic Research in Developmental Disabilities (IBR) is recruiting an Institute Director to lead its research mission, oversee clinical and research operations, and collaborate with the New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD). IBR is a 30‑lab, world‑renowned research facility located on Staten Island, NY, dedicated to advancing science that improves lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The Director will drive the development of a new Genomics Core Facility, cultivate strategic partnerships, and ensure operational excellence in a collaborative research environment.
Responsibilities
- Manage, administer, and oversee all clinical and research departments at IBR.
- Establish long‑ and short‑term research goals, develop and coordinate research programs, and align them with OPWDD’s mission to help people with IDD live richer lives.
- Collaborate with IBR researchers to facilitate research grant submissions and publish findings.
- Interact with research scientists, clinicians, agency officials, and external partners to advance strategically focused research partnerships.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, patients, families, and other partners.
Minimum Qualifications
- Doctorate in medicine.
- Six years of progressively responsible experience in clinical research, including three years of teaching as a regular faculty member at an approved medical school and three years of supervising a clinical research and teaching program that includes the publication of research findings.
Preferred Qualifications
- Current medical degree with an active license and a PhD, ideally Board‑Certified in Medical Genetics.
- Demonstrable experience obtaining NIH funding and knowledge of whole genome sequencing, single‑cell PCR, and pluripotent cell lines.
- Experience overseeing a large research institute and ensuring the quality and integrity of empirical evidence.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and project‑management skills in a cross‑functional, matrixed environment.
- Proven experience leading and managing research partnerships.
- Track record of peer‑reviewed publications and federal grant funding.
- Ten years of progressively responsible administrative, supervisory, or managerial experience in a related field or facility serving people with IDD.

- Salary determined by education; a higher salary is offered for candidates meeting all preferred qualifications.
