The Director of Communications will lead the development and execution of an integrated communications strategy that advances Essential Access Health’s mission, strengthens its visibility, and supports fund development and external affairs priorities. This role ensures that our voice is clear, aligned, and grounded in the realities of the communities and providers we support.
Reporting to the Vice President Fund Development, the Director will partner across teams to translate strategy into compelling narratives that elevate our impact, support resource development, and position Essential Access as a trusted leader in sexual and reproductive health care.
Core Responsibilities
Strategic Communications Leadership
Develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy aligned with organizational priorities and advancement goals
Ensure consistency and clarity in messaging across all platforms, audiences, and initiatives
Shape and steward organizational voice, narrative, and brand positioning

Fund Development + External Affairs Alignment
Partner closely with the VP of Fund Development to support fundraising strategy through donor communications, campaigns, and materials
Develop compelling cases for support, proposals, reports, and stewardship communications
Align communications efforts with external affairs strategy, including policy and advocacy positioning

Content + Narrative Development
Translate programmatic, policy, and field-based insights into clear, accessible, and compelling content
Oversee the development of high-quality materials, including reports, digital content, thought leadership, and executive communications
Elevate lessons from the field to inform broader narratives and influence systems-level conversations

Brand + Visibility
Strengthen Essential Access Health’s visibility across key audiences, including funders, partners, policymakers, and the public
Identify and pursue strategic opportunities to amplify organizational voice and impact
Oversee digital presence, including website, social media, and email communications

Team Leadership + Management
Supervise and support the Communications Manager, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team environment
Establish clear priorities, workflows, and performance expectations
Build internal communications capacity across teams to ensure alignment and shared ownership

Executive + Board Communications
Support CEO and senior leadership with messaging, presentations, and external communications
Develop materials for Board engagement, including strategic updates and external positioning
Ensure alignment and coordination of communications during key organizational moments

Qualifications
8–10+ years of progressive experience in communications, with a focus on strategy, storytelling, and external positioning
Experience supporting fund development through communications (e.g., donor materials, campaigns, stewardship)
Strong writer and editor with the ability to translate complex information into clear, compelling narratives
Experience managing communications across multiple channels and audiences
Demonstrated ability to lead and develop staff
Familiarity with health care, public health, or nonprofit sectors strongly preferred
