Balfour Beatty is a leading national infrastructure and construction company. The Bridge of Allan Flood Defence Scheme is a £16 m project designed to protect the town from flooding, safeguarding 87 properties and 700 m of roadway. The scheme, part of Scotland’s national Flood Scheme Protections programme, will upgrade flood‑protection walls and bunds, replacing ageing 1980s defences. Professionals on the project will deliver complex water‑retention structures, stakeholder‑driven design, and sustainable construction practices.
What you’ll be doing
Core
Live the Balfour Beatty Values
Ensure a relentless focus on Zero Harm
Support delivery of CSUK’s Sustainability activities
Motivate the section team, manage performance, and provide training and coaching as appropriate
Health, Safety & Environmental
Set targets and KPIs in line with project objectives and monitor performance
Conduct periodic Safety & Environment Tours as required by the Project H&S Plan
Triage incident investigation, gather data, and propose improvement actions
Lead risk reviews and update the Project Risk Register
Monitor effectiveness of the H&S Management System and keep the team updated on legislative changes
Engineering Control
Allocate sufficient resources to the Works Section and ensure capability levels are adequate
Identify training needs and arrange necessary education
Quality
Set quality targets and KPIs in line with project objectives
Ensure site audits are undertaken and act on findings
Implement systems to manage construction quality
Lead improvement working groups and own handover documentation for the section
Productivity
Set output targets and monitor performance, reporting section progress
Analyse programme against available resources
Manage sub‑contractor performance against KPIs
Produce operational target programmes aligning with overall construction programme
Chair short‑interval control meetings to review site performance
Commercial
Set commercial targets and KPIs in line with budget forecast
Provide reports for weekly project meetings and implement improvement actions
Participate in subcontractor procurement and advise on commercial matters
Prepare and update the cost schedule for the section
Produce a cost plan and manage cost value
Who we’re looking for
Core
Communicate safety system requirements clearly and enforce compliance; stop operations when necessary
Take ownership of tasks, communicate outcomes, and lead a team to deliver results
Demonstrate strong work ethic and flexibility to work unsociable hours as required by the programme
Work independently, seek opportunities within the scope of responsibility
Hold a current driving licence and CSCS card. SMSTS qualified.
Excellent team player and leader, able to work without supervision
Make decisions based on best available information and have a solution‑oriented approach
Strong communication and influencing skills; good report writing and IT proficiency
Model required behaviours to align with company, project and team objectives
Health, Safety & Environmental
Understand method statements and coach others in document production
Guide others in accident and incident investigation principles
Maintain current knowledge of H&S legislation and company systems
Innovate to enhance safe systems of work
Engineering Control
Experienced in resource allocation and skills upgrading
Competent in reading technical drawings and applying design management principles
Quality
Understand organisational business management systems and processes
Experience in handover and self‑certification of works, including management of the same
Productivity
Analyse and improve fully resourced stage programmes using accepted format/software
Understand sub‑contractor KPIs and manage performance accordingly
Adapt programme dynamically while maintaining target focus
Manage pavement reconstruction and surfacing operations, including phasing and contingency planning
Manage varied infrastructure works with testing and handover responsibilities
Commercial
Set financial targets aligned with budget and produce realistic forecasts
Identify cost recovery opportunities and guide team in record keeping
Knowledge of NEC and other relevant contract forms
Desirable
Strong leadership and management skills for multi‑disciplined teams
Interest in formal qualifications such as ICE
Independent judgement and breadth of experience
