Overview
The Associate Producer generates, plans, and develops ideas for newscasts and is responsible for conceiving, writing, and preparing broadcast material including local and national stories, newsbreaks, teasers, headlines, and digital content. The position reports to the News Director.
Responsibilities
- Lead and conduct the news meeting, generating story ideas, dispatching news crews and reporters.
- Oversee the on‑air look of news broadcasts to ensure they follow institutional policies.
- Proofread rundown and copy for accuracy prior to going on the air.
- Control the content and creative flow of the assigned broadcast, including writing of teasers and headlines, ordering graphics, and overseeing stories’ production.
- Work with the Executive Producer and News Director as liaison between producer, photographers, and reporters in the field.
- Select stories and assign them to reporters and photographers.
- Prepare newscast rundown (story selection and order) on iNews system for morning newscasts.
- Supervise writing and pre‑production of each element of the newscast, including all anchor‑read stories and reporter full tracks, video editing, and graphics.
- Line‑produce – backtiming – the newscast while on the air.
- Create and execute original stories for show development and sweeps projects production.
- Perform other duties as deemed necessary.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 6 months of experience as a News Producer.
- Digital content creation experience.
- Social media savvy.
- Comfortable working in a lead capacity.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, type, edit, reach, and sit for up to eight hours.
- Full command of the Spanish language, both written and spoken.
- Strong sense of journalistic ethics and excellent editorial judgment.
- Knowledge of local, state, and national current events and Latino community demographics in Arizona.
- Leadership skills and team‑player mindset.
- Knowledge of newsroom operations and electronic news‑gathering (ENG).
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
