About The Work Unit
Vanderbilt University Public Safety operates under the Office of the Associate Vice Chancellor / Chief of Police for the Division of Administration. The department consists of over 200 staff organized into Administration, Operations, and Auxiliary Services.
Responsibilities
Administrative Services
Manage the Communications Unit; supervise specialists, monitor performance, provide training and corrective action.
Ensure policies and procedures are followed, conduct performance evaluations and maintain holiday/vacation schedules.
Investigate employee misconduct, recommend disciplinary actions, and conduct periodic quality audits of communications traffic and records.
Represent the VPD as Terminal Agency Coordinator for the Tennessee Information Enforcement System (TIES) and provide training on TIES.
Develop policies and procedures for the Communications Unit and provide backup for the Records Unit when absent.
Support Services
Maintain communications equipment, consoles, supplies, and related resources used by personnel.
Training
Train and certify communications specialists as dispatchers, NCIC query operators and other required systems.
Community Services
Provide proactive community outreach and assist community members as needed.
Supervisory Relationship
Lead the Communications Department and report to the Chief of Staff.
Education and Certifications
Bachelor’s Degree preferred; experience may substitute on a year‑for‑year basis.
Required certifications: Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), National Crime Information Center (NCIC), Tennessee Information Enforcement System (TIES), Enhanced 911.
Experience and Skills
8 years of related public‑safety agency experience with at least 1 year in management.
Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulatory requirements governing radio and electronic transmission.
Proficient in operation and maintenance of radio, computer, alarm, and other communication systems.
Strong management, team‑building, and calm‑under‑pressure skills.
Ability to coordinate, direct administrative and support personnel, and adapt to evolving needs.
Knowledge of industry best practices and continuous improvement initiatives.
