Job Overview International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a humanitarian organization that responds to the world's worst crises. Founded in 1933, we work in more than 40 countries and 29 U.S. cities to help people affected by conflict and disaster restore health, safety, education, economic well‑being, and dignity.
The Newcomer Youth Summer Academy (NYSA) is a six‑week program that prepares newly arrived refugee youth to succeed in the New York City public school system. Up to 130 students aged 5‑21 from over 20 countries participate in academic, creative‑arts, physical‑education, and life‑skills classes with field trips on Fridays.
The Graphic Designer will design and assemble NYSA yearbook and additional design assets, collaborating with the Yearbook Coordinator and volunteer NYSA photographers. Work is part‑time (4‑15 hours per week, flexible scheduling) and includes on‑site presence at the Summer Academy and meetings at the IRC NewYork office.
Responsibilities Create assets for the NYSA 2026 brand identity that incorporate the annual theme (PRIDE), values (Positivity, Responsibility, Innovation, determination, Empathy) and mascot, including a T‑shirt design, slide‑deck templates, classroom posters and more.
Develop concept(s) for the NYSA yearbook design and layout.
Produce the design and layout within the defined time frame.
Insert photos into the layout and produce final files for printing.
Communicate and coordinate regularly with the team to ensure yearbook activities occur on schedule and resolve scheduling or other conflicts in a timely manner.
Receive and integrate feedback.
Work with the team to ensure accuracy of all yearbook elements (pictures are properly labeled and placed).
Attend NYSA training (June29–July2).
Provide all files to IRC.
Learning Objectives Strengthen expertise in taking a graphic design project from concept to deliverable.
Learn about the creative needs of nonprofit humanitarian and social‑service agencies and how to meet those needs.
Practice developing, refining and executing a concept that exemplifies a defined theme and values.
Requirements At least one year of experience as a graphic designer.
Strong organizational, communication and collaboration skills.
Flexible and able to solve problems.
Cultural competence and cross‑cultural or overseas experience required.
Strong experience with Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.
Experience working with diverse populations desirable.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Consent that the yearbook is the sole property of IRC and that it may not be used by the designer without IRC permission.
Must be located in the UnitedStates, with preference for candidates who can work on site in NewYorkCity.
