The Role
Children’s Cancer Association was founded in 1995 by the Ellis family after their five-year-old daughter, Alexandra, died of cancer. Their goal was to create something extraordinary: an organization with a new vision for what pediatric cancer support services look like. Today, the JoyRx Mentorship, Nature, and Music programs reach thousands of hospitalized children of all ages and diagnoses. Our programs reach children where they are — and make their tough days a little brighter.

The Marketing & Communications Coordinator is a content creator and organized project coordinator who helps maintain and achieve the team’s marketing/communications deadline and editorial calendars. They provide brand management support and assist with promoting the organization’s mission, programs, events and communications channels to engage donors, volunteers, partners, and the community.

Key Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include creating content for websites and social media, creating email campaigns, drafting press releases, and helping make event promotional materials. This role also maintains departmental coordination for project and campaign deadlines, vendor relations, departmental expense reporting and processes, and generates marketing and performance reports. As a strategic communications partner: this team member is thoughtful about audience, fluent in brand voice, savvy in digital marketing, and adept at mission-oriented storytelling and segmentation strategies to guide engagement and inform creative work.

Essential Functions
Content Creation & Social Media

Develop and publish content for website, social media channels, and email newsletters to enhance brand awareness and meet campaign goals

Create compassionate, educational content to introduce families with hospitalized children to CCA’s free JoyRx programs — including content for newsletters, brochures, flyers, signage, and website content.

Coordinate departmental projects, deadlines, and integrated calendars. This includes prioritization strategies, with an understanding of quality, capacity, and team dynamics based on feedback and planning from the Marketing and Communications Manager.

Campaign, Event Promotion & Project Support

Create copy for creative campaigns, publications, donor communications and special projects as assigned

Promote CCA events with content for emails, websites, sponsor decks, presentations, and collateral materials, which may include live event scripting and family spokesperson support.

Support copy creation for any onsite event or fundraising activations, i.e. auction descriptions or various donor programs

Media & Communications
Brand Stewardship & Administrative Support

Support CCA business, leadership, and partner development with compelling content for proposals, presentations, and partnership materials.

Execute basic graphic design and content creation projects by adhering to brand standards and templates for email, social, and website.

Support award submission materials with compelling, well‑crafted narrative content. Assist with grant material review or editing as needed.

Assist with reporting and campaign performance benchmarks.

Public Relations & Media

Draft press releases and media alerts, and assist with data entry and research for media relations contacts and pitch opportunities.

Schedule and support spokespeople and family storytellers as needed

Work with CCA‑served families to gather and share impact stories; coordinate and support speaking opportunities for families with sensitivity and care.

Audience & Brand

Demonstrate fluency across CCA’s complex, multi‑segment audience — tailoring tone and messaging for donors, volunteers, families served, medical staff, corporate sponsors, and community partners.

Understand and translate brand and style guidelines into a clear, compassionate, and human voice; proofread materials for colleagues and provide quality control across channels.

Maintain and evolve CCA’s content and brand style guide, ensuring digital platforms are updated and consistently aligned with brand standards.

Collaborate with internal teams, including Development colleagues, to ensure consistent messaging and branding across all communication channels, donor programs, and publications.

Assist in the onsite coordination and execution of brand experiences at key special events, including fundraisers, community outreach programs, and public activations.

Skills

Excellent time management, organizational, and analytical skills

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, paired with basic design skills to fully support email templates, website design, and social media standards.

Empathy, poise, and emotional maturity to professionally and appropriately interact with and represent families served by Children’s Cancer Association

Proficiency in Microsoft Suite of products, particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook required; Adobe Creative Suite, asana, and Mailchimp experience is a plus

Ability to meet deadlines in a fast‑paced environment

Self‑starter with the ability to work independently and within a team

Education & Experience

5+ years proven experience as a marketing and communications professional.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full‑time (40 hours/week) Non‑Exempt position. Some flexibility in hours is allowed; days and hours of work are generally Monday through Thursday, 8:00 am – 5:30 pm, and Friday 8:00 am – 12:00 pm, with the option to be remote Mondays and Fridays. This position may require occasional evening hours and weekend work.

Location
This position is based in Portland, OR. CCA offers a hybrid office environment, with both onsite days and the ability to work remotely up to two days/week (Mondays & Fridays).
