The Guardian seeks a Breaking News Reporter to provide political and general assignment breaking news coverage for The Guardian.
Department: Editorial, Guardian US
Reports to: Deputy Head of News and Washington Editor
Normal location: New York, NY or Washington DC
Terms and conditions: Permanent role, News Media Guild position. Some weekend and evening work required.
Annual salary range: $75,000 - $85,000
Main duties and responsibilities:
Report and write daily, breaking news stories, including politics, from across the United States for both the New York and DC-based news editors' desks
Be able to write breaking news stories on other topics as sometimes required by the New York daily news desk
Cover breaking news for the liveblog when needed
Generate original story ideas across multiple topics of general-interest news that will be accessible and appealing to a US and global readership
Adept at swift, meaningful aggregation in a fast-paced environment
Work as a collaborative member of a digital-first newsroom
Produce accurate and compelling daily news stories with flair, originality and knowledge of Guardian style and tone
Embrace new storytelling platforms, engage on current and evolving social-media platforms, participate in video and interactive reports, and collaborate on special projects
Knowledge and experience:
Two to three years experience in digital reporting for a prominent newspaper or website
Proven ability to write smooth, clean copy in a fast-paced environment
Proven ability to report out issues and stories for fast-paced breaking news
Excellent knowledge of the US news landscape across multiple topic areas
Awareness of Guardian house style and standards
Skills and aptitudes:
Ability to deliver well-written, tight stories for web and print on deadline, from breaking news to incremental reporting on major unfolding stories
Excellent news judgment and high standards for fair and accurate reporting
Excellent awareness of social media as a means for generating and developing storylines
Ability to work with colleagues and news desks across multiple time zones and continents
Ability to form productive relationships within and outside the newsroom and with industry organizations, interview subjects and contacts
Ability to generate fresh ideas and angles
Excellent communication skills
Comfortable producing high-quality stories under tight deadlines
