KAUAI AVIAN RESEARCH/MANAGEMENT COORDINATOR – ID# 226350
Position Summary: Lead planning, organization, and implementation of research, monitoring, and management projects on Kauai to benefit native forest birds, especially threatened and endangered species. Oversee field work, logistics, budget tracking, regulatory compliance, partner liaison, and team supervision. Develop proposals, write grant proposals, produce annual work plans, reports, and awareness events. Conduct field data analysis and lead seashore field operations. May travel to other islands for site visits.

Responsibilities

Lead project planning and execution.

Coordinate research, conservation management, and field activities.

Track budgets and ensure regulatory approvals.

Develop proposals and write grant applications.

Lead and train a team of up to ten members.

Produce annual work plans and reports.

Conduct field data analysis and present findings.

Maintain environmental compliance documentation.

Travel to other islands for site visits and fieldwork.

Qualifications

Education: Master’s Degree in Biological Sciences, Natural Resource Management, Biological Conservation, or related field. Bachelor’s with two additional years experience may substitute.

Experience: 3-5 years in biological research, ornithology, invasive species management, or conservation management, including 1-3 years mist‑netting, banding, blood sampling of passerines, surveys of plants and animals, nest monitoring, and 1-2 years supervisory experience.

Knowledge: Conservation management principles, remote field operations, avian biology, native Hawaiian ecosystems, wildlife inventory and monitoring techniques, experimental design, data analysis, field regulations, and employee supervision and workplace safety.

Abilities & Skills: Strong organizational and logistical planning, problem solving, team leadership, communication, program management, data analysis, budgeting, proficiency with Microsoft Office, Access, GIS, and statistical software.

Post‑Offer Conditions: American Red Cross first‑aid CPR certification, helicopter safety and sling‑load courses, information security training, state pesticide certification.

Physical/Medical: Ability to conduct fieldwork in dense vegetation, remote areas, hike up to 10 miles with 40‑lb backpack, work around and fly in approved helicopters.

Certification: Requires valid driver’s license, and valid personal‑vehicle insurance if required.

Secondary Qualifications

Management, public relations, and administration skills.

Grant writing and fund‑raising abilities.

Publication of peer‑reviewed scientific papers.

Experience with land managers in Hawai‘i.

Database design and management expertise.

Reintroduction or translocation experience of passerine birds.

High level of banding to qualify for BBL sub‑permit.

Aviculture skills including husbandry and fluid administration.

Radio‑tracking of animal movements.
