The Devices and Services org at Amazon has been the innovation engine of consumer electronics with the industry‑leading Kindle e‑readers, Fire tablets, Fire TV, Echo, the most popular smart speaker and Alexa, the leading AI assistant. We are looking for a Senior Applied Scientist – Audio to join the Edge Technology team. Your work will impact the lives of Echo customers and focus on all Echo audio features, including Spatial audio and Home Theater.
Responsibilities
- Champion Echo music processing technology innovation from ideation to productization.
- Propose new research projects, gain stakeholder buy‑in, and lead the team for execution.
- Work closely with an interdisciplinary product development team and outside partners to bring prototype algorithms into commercialization.
- Lead in an open and collaborative environment.
Basic Qualifications
- 5+ years of industry or academic research experience.
- Experience in embedded development in C/C++ and full software development life cycle.
- Strong written and oral communication skills at all organizational levels.
- Proven track record in commercializing innovative audio (music processing, spatial audio) algorithms.
- Passion for high‑fidelity music rendering and skilled critical listening.
- Expert knowledge in music signal processing theory and applications such as filter design, limiter/compressor, dynamic range compression, up‑mixing, binaural rendering.
- Proficiency with real‑time audio programming in C/C++ and Python/Matlab.
Preferred Qualifications
- Peer‑reviewed scientific contributions in premier journals and conferences.
- Experience with ML applications in music processing such as generative models for source separation, up‑mixing, and 3D audio.
- Basic understanding of physical acoustics, room acoustics, and transducer theory.
- Knowledge of full smart audio system design: microphone array, loudspeaker, ADC, gain stages.
- Familiarity with voice processing—beamforming, echo cancellation, noise reduction.
- Understanding of music production processes: stereo and multichannel formats, mixing/mastering, reproduction.
- Experience mentoring junior researchers and graduate interns.

- Sunnyvale, CA – $192,200.00 – $260,000.00 USD annually
- Cambridge, MA – $167,100.00 – $226,100.00 USD annually
- Bellevue, WA – $167,100.00 – $226,100.00 USD annually
