News Editor
The News Editor oversees daily newsroom operations, ensuring the delivery of accurate, timely, and engaging local news coverage across print and digital platforms. This role assigns stories, edits reporters' work, manages deadlines, and upholds the highest standards of ethical journalism. As a key editorial leader, the News Editor helps shape the publication's tone, credibility, and impact within the community.
Key Responsibilities
Plan, coordinate, and manage daily and weekly news coverage for print and online platforms.
Assign stories to reporters and freelancers, providing clear guidance on angles, sourcing, and deadlines.
Edit articles for accuracy, clarity, grammar, AP Style compliance, and adherence to ethical journalism standards.
Lead and oversee breaking news coverage, ensuring fast, accurate updates for digital audiences.
Collaborate with photography, design, and digital teams to enhance storytelling with visuals, graphics, and multimedia elements.
Track newsroom progress toward publication deadlines and manage the news budget effectively.
Mentor reporters by providing constructive feedback, helping develop strong writing, interviewing, and reporting skills.
Participate in editorial planning meetings and contribute to long-range story development and investigative initiatives.
Maintain strong community awareness to support relevant, impactful local news coverage.
Ensure all published content meets legal, ethical, and professional journalism standards.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong editorial judgment, news sense, and attention to detail.
Excellent writing, copy editing, and headline crafting skills; mastery of AP Style required.
Proven ability to manage multiple deadlines and oversee several projects simultaneously.
Effective interpersonal and leadership skills, with the ability to coach and motivate newsroom staff.
Experience working with CMS platforms, digital publishing tools, and online newsroom workflows.
Commitment to community journalism principles and ethical reporting practices.
Familiarity with social media engagement, web analytics, and audience growth strategies preferred.
Knowledge of multimedia storytelling, including video, audio, or photo editing preferred.
Understanding of SEO best practices for digital news content preferred.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
3–5 years of newsroom experience in reporting or editing, preferably in a local or community news environment.
Experience in both print and digital media environments preferred
Working Conditions
Work performed in a mixed newsroom/office environment with options for remote or hybrid work depending on organizational policy.
Fast-paced, deadline-driven environment requiring quick decision-making and adaptability.
Requires flexibility with scheduling, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays based on news cycles and breaking news demands.
