Job Overview
Join our dedicated team as a Photographer in the Senate Photographic Services branch within the Support Services department at the U.S. Senate Sergeant at Arms. In this role you will create executive‑level visual communication products, capture still and short‑form video during complex events, and provide support to a wide variety of Senate‑related activities including official portraits, committee hearings, press conferences, presidential inaugurations, and more.
Key Accountabilities / Essential Job Duties
Plan, shoot, and edit photographs for a variety of projects, including official government portraits.
Create retouched images and intricate composites in Photoshop for use in official portraits.
Conceptualize and develop visual assets that meet Senate standards and align with the Senate’s visual communication guidelines.
Apply principles of color theory to assess and enhance image color, density, and contrast.
Process batch imagery and ingest metadata to maintain organized image libraries.
Maintain and clean equipment to ensure optimal functionality.
Support short‑form video production, including interviews, event highlights, and b‑roll for public‑facing messages.
Plan assignments and coordinate with stakeholders to meet deadlines.
Communicate effectively and respectfully with subjects, staff, and co‑workers.
Job Specifications
Required Education:
High School Diploma or GED.
Other Duties / Responsibilities:
Record and edit video, establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, and provide respectful direction to diverse subjects.
Required Work Experience
Five (5) to seven (7) years of professional photographer experience.
Required Special Skills / Knowledge
Proficiency in photographic principles, framing, and shooting practices.
Accurate assessment of color, density, and contrast with a high level of detail.
Knowledge of AP style caption writing.
Skill in batch imagery processing and metadata ingestion.
Proficient use of the Adobe Suite, Photoshop, Photo Mechanic, and Microsoft Office on PC and Apple platforms.
Strong communication and collaboration skills.
Excellent critical evaluation abilities.
Desired Qualifications
Experience in capturing, editing, and planning photography and short‑form videos across diverse projects.
Produce engaging visual products that document significant, high‑visibility, historic moments with accuracy and deadline discipline.
Adherence to Senate Photo Services’ quality, style, and technical standards.
Collaborative teamwork in concept development and visual asset creation.
Application of color theory to enhance visual appeal.
Expertise in batch imaging and metadata handling.
Working Conditions
On‑site presence required during Senate sessions, including late nights, weekends, inclement weather, and holidays.
Work involves moderate lifting, outdoor exposure, physical effort (walking, bending, crawling, standing), and occasional ladder or scaffolding use.
Schedule may fluctuate and often requires early mornings, late evenings, and minimal notice.
Travel may be required.
Conditions of Employment
Must be a U.S. citizen or otherwise eligible to work in the United States.
Must pass a background/security investigation.
