Job Summary
Supports the planning and execution of strategic communications for the university community and stakeholders. Manages and coordinates the university's news and media team, oversees public relations efforts, handles media inquiries, and develops media content across all outlets. Plays a key role on the crisis communication team.

Responsibilities

Lead and direct daily activities of the communications team to ensure content aligns with the mission and strategic vision of the university.

Serve as main point of contact for The Conversation membership and develop a sustainable plan to support faculty participation.

Maintain key areas of the university website, keeping information current.

Prepare stories and press releases for media and web distribution.

Maintain media relationships and accurate, current media contact lists.

Maintain the university experts' database, ensuring it remains up-to-date.

Drive team projects to completion with project management of deadlines and deliverables across multiple constituencies.

Coordinate with supervisor and staff for consistency of messaging and timely distribution of materials.

Oversee media activities, promote the university and colleges, and secure local, regional, and national media placements.

Manage vendor relationships and services such as media monitoring, database, Expert File, and Newswise.

Stay competent and current through professional reading, networking, and attendance at professional development courses directed by the Assistant Vice President of Communications.

Required Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Communications, Marketing, Corporate Communications, or a related field.

Driver’s License:

Current, valid, and unrestricted driver’s license.

Experience:

Five (5) years of experience in the related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced Degree:

An advanced degree in a related field.

Media Experience:

Prior experience working with the media.

Managerial Experience:

Strong managerial experience.

Abilities, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Able to think critically and analytically.

Adaptable; able to work independently and across teams.

Strong sense of ownership and ability to work across organizational boundaries for timely completion of tasks.

Able to handle multiple tasks or projects simultaneously, meeting assigned deadlines.

Knowledgeable of AP Style and results‑oriented, enthusiastic, resourceful, creative with a can‑do attitude.

Proficient with Microsoft Office suite and related computer applications.

Strong writing skills, organized, self‑directed, disciplined.

Excellent interpersonal, initiative, teamwork, problem‑solving, independent judgment, organization, communication, time management, project management, and presentation skills.

Strong attention to detail, follow‑up skills, customer service, phone and e‑mail etiquette.

Other Information

This is a supervisory position.

No financial responsibilities.

Position requires driving.

Position is considered a trust position.

Does not require a purchasing card (P‑Card).

Travel may be required 25%–49% of the time.
