Overview
The Writer/Editor produces high‑quality editorial content that highlights the research, clinical, and education activities of Yale School of Medicine. This role contributes both academic and patient‑facing storytelling, supporting digital growth and institutional visibility by producing content that is accurate, audience‑centered, AI‑informed, and optimized for discoverability across evolving digital environments.

AI fluency.

Excellent communication skills and the ability to translate complex scientific and clinical topics into clear, engaging narratives for diverse audiences.

Familiarity with digital content channels and the ability to adapt content for different audiences and formats.

Working knowledge of SEO/AEO best practices and structured content principles.

Preferred Skills And Abilities
Background covering health, science, academic medicine, higher education, or related institutional communications.

Principal Responsibilities

Pitch, research, and write news stories, faculty profiles, feature articles, newsletters, and static web content; conduct interviews with faculty, institutional leaders, and subject matter experts.

Proactively identify high‑impact story opportunities through relationship‑building, careful listening, and ongoing engagement with faculty, departments, and institutional partners; identify emerging themes, connect work across departments, and shape integrated content packages that extend beyond a single story or format.

Use AI regularly in the editorial workflow to support content development and scalability, including identifying and organizing source materials, generating and refining structured drafts, critically reviewing content for accuracy and tone, and coordinating expert review prior to publication.

Collaborate with editorial, multimedia, and digital colleagues during story ideation and development to support integrated storytelling across written, visual, and video formats.

Implement content within YSM’s web content management system, ensuring proper formatting, tagging, structured content modules, cross‑linking, and optimization for performance and search visibility.

Develop and execute public relations strategy, output, and performance for the department with the goal of increasing media impressions across local, national, industry‑specific, and alumni media.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with media representatives and other departments, university publications, and the Office of Public Affairs to develop and publicize stories.

Assess university faculty inventions and student startups for newsworthiness and create compelling news and public relations content; develop press releases, blog articles, website updates, newsletter articles, and social media content.

Manage delivery channels for newsworthy content, including updating and maintaining department websites, social media accounts, email newsletters, and creating video, print, and on‑campus events. Create websites that embed existing content from Yale and external sites.

Seek out, negotiate with, and recommend external organizations that can provide services that optimize both the cost and functionality of the new communications strategy.

Ensure that all communications conform to university guidelines; hire student workers as needed to assist in producing copy.

Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and four years of experience in website design, production, marketing, project management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
