The Shorthorn’s illustrators and editorial cartoonists are responsible for producing hand‑drawn and/or computer‑generated illustrations and cartoons that relate to stories and news in The Shorthorn’s print and online editions. Illustrators and editorial cartoonists report to the Design Editor.
Illustrator duties include:
Works with the Design Editor in creating original illustrations and graphic elements that accompany articles and packages for news, opinion, Life and sports pages in both print and online editions.
Checks in daily and works when asked to create illustrations for advance and daily news pages.
Create graphic elements for online use, including 3-D or animated work.
Performs other tasks as assigned or needed.
Editorial cartoonist duties include:
Produce original editorial cartoons for the The Shorthorn Opinion section in print and online that have a political or social message that relates to current events or personalities and that are relevant to The Shorthorn’s target readership.
Meet specified deadline for each editorial cartoon.
Performs other tasks as assigned or needed.
Qualifications:
Must be able to initiate own ideas as well as produce illustrations or cartoons on topics assigned by the Opinion Editor or Editor‑in‑Chief.
Must be enrolled at UTA for at least six credit hours during the appointment semester, be in good academic standing with the university and meet all other requirements for holding a The Shorthorn Staff position.
Basic understanding of Freehand, Illustrator and/or Photoshop preferred.
Work samples must reflect your cartooning style and your ability to translate ideas containing political or social message into illustrations and cartoons relevant to The Shorthorn’s readership.
