About the Role
As the Production Planning Supervisor, you will lead a team responsible for production scheduling and inventory planning to support customer requirements and business objectives. You will drive alignment across production, supply chain, and sales while ensuring planning processes meet operational, service, and financial targets. You will provide direction, coaching, and performance management for planning team members while continuously improving systems and processes.
Production Planning & Scheduling Oversight (30%)
Lead and oversee development and execution of production schedules to meet customer demand and operational efficiency targets. Oversee the generation of work orders and production schedules for the movement of inventory through the production process. Establish sequencing, capacity planning, and lead times across production operations. Ensure accuracy and execution of work orders, scheduling transactions, and production system updates. Monitor schedule adherence and take corrective action to mitigate risk to delivery commitments.
Leadership & Team Management (25%)
Direct, coach, and develop a team. Set clear performance expectations and monitor results against plan. Provide ongoing feedback, conduct performance evaluations, and address performance concerns as needed. Allocate workload, prioritize planning activities, and ensure appropriate staffing coverage.
Process Ownership & Continuous Improvement (20%)
Own and improve planning processes including MRP systems, item master data, and scheduling tools. Drive standardization and continuous improvement using Lean and PDCA methodologies. Analyze production data and KPIs to identify trends, gaps, and improvement opportunities. Initiate and coordinate inventory and production control improvement activities. Partner with leadership to implement process improvements that increase service levels and reduce waste.
Cross-Functional Collaboration (15%)
Collaborate with production, sales, inventory control, shipping, and purchasing to resolve planning constraints and support business priorities. Serve as the primary escalation point for complex scheduling or supply issues. Align planning outputs with company objectives related to safety, quality, delivery, and cost.
Inventory & Performance Management (10%)
Oversee management of finished goods, WIP, and component inventory levels. Balance customer service levels, working capital, and inventory turns. Track key performance metrics (on-time delivery, schedule attainment, inventory accuracy) and ensure team accountability.
Desired Skills and Experience
High School Diploma or GED required; Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Operations, or related field preferred.
APICS certification preferred.
5+ years of production planning/scheduling experience, including lead or supervisory experience.
Strong knowledge of ERP/MRP systems; SAP preferred.
Experience leading teams and driving accountability in a manufacturing environment.
Lean or continuous improvement experience preferred.
Demonstrates ability to lead, coach, and develop employees; holds team accountable for results and performance standards.
Effectively communicates expectations and provides clear direction; builds collaboration across functions and influences stakeholders.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and drive results under pressure.
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, lookups, data analysis).
Strong attention to detail and process discipline.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
Frequent sitting, talking, hearing; occasional walking and standing. May occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs. Works in a professional office environment with computers, phones, printers/scanners. Domestic travel up to 10% required. Reasonable accommodations can be made for disabilities.
Compensation & Benefits
Salary: $71,900 - $115,000 per year.
