Position Overview
KU RECREATION SERVICES, a department within Student Affairs, provides a campus-wide impact by improving the quality of life for all students, faculty, staff, affiliates, retirees, alumni, spouses, and domestic partners through our fitness and wellness initiatives. RECREATION SERVICES provides state‑of‑the‑art recreational programs, facilities, and services.

The University of Kansas RECREATION SERVICES department seeks an Assistant Director of Outdoor Pursuits to play an essential role in the management and support of RECREATION SERVICES core functions including, but not limited to, the comprehensive management of the Outdoor Pursuits program. The work of the Assistant Director of Outdoor Pursuits will directly support RECREATION SERVICES programmatic efforts and initiatives to support its core values of Community, Excellence, Experience, Growth, and Integrity which align directly with KU's Institutional Priorities of Healthy and Vibrant Communities and Student Success.

Programs within RECREATION SERVICES include Fitness, Intramurals, Sport Clubs, and Outdoor Pursuits. Fitness offers KU Fit group fitness with classes focused on cardio, strength, mind‑body wellness, personal training, and fitness assessments. Intramurals play team sports, team tournaments, and individual activities. Sport Clubs participate in a wide variety of competitive, recreational, and instructional sports. Outdoor Pursuits offers a rock‑climbing wall and equipment rental center. Additional information can be found at www.recreation.ku.edu.

This position is a full‑time unclassified, non‑exempt position that will report to the Senior Associate Director of Programs and will administer a comprehensive Intramural Program with an overall budget of over $90,000, approximately 3,000 participants, and over 45 activities with as many as 175 teams each, and 60 student employees.

Job Description
55% Program Administration

Provides leadership through the following:

Recruitment, selection, training, supervision, payroll, risk management and evaluation of student program managers, student supervisors and officials

Coordinate the maintenance, supervision, scheduling and planning for Intramural program and

Coordinate facility scheduling of Intramurals and promote a safe environment for program participants and

Maintain, coordinate and update use of IMLeagues online system.

Verification of student enrollment for eligibility to

Administration of When to Work online scheduling system for Intramural student staff

Conduct staff training, officials training and bi‑weekly meetings

Coordinate and accompany student travel for regional flag football and basketball

Coordinate and Interact with Student Conduct & Community Standards regarding discipline of participants

Promote student leadership opportunities on and off

Develop and administer all Intramural program policies and procedures to reflect Recreation Services mission and University philosophy.

Develop, implement and audit a comprehensive risk management plan for the Intramural program including concussion protocol.

Develop and maintain a close working relationship with campus/community groups g., Association of University Residence Halls/Scholarship Halls, Interfraternal Council and Panhellenic, Student Senate, Recreation Advisory Board, Lawrence Parks and Recreation, Homecoming Committee, etc

Generate program reports for participation, injuries and incidents and assist in assessment of

Perform on site visits to Intramural games/events.

Responsible for the appropriate use of state, departmental and work‑related rental vehicles as a driver and/or passenger

Assist the Assistant Director of Marketing in marketing and promoting Intramurals through maintenance/creation Intramurals webpages on the Recreation Services website and

20% Staff Development (department‑wide)

Develop, implement, maintain and evaluate a comprehensive staff development program for the department that can include recognition of career and personal highlights, career milestones, staff gatherings, student staff appreciation week, awards programs, etc.

Assist staff with developing annual professional development plans

Assist staff with developing annual professional network plans

Coordinate plans for conference attendance

Coordinate annual department events: summer orientation

Co‑coordinate development of annual all‑student staff training with Assistant Director of Sport Clubs

10% Budget

Maintain, assist and coordinates Recreation Services inventory and manages/processes equipment purchases.

Develop and maintain the Intramural program budget; assist in the preparation of annual departmental budget

10% Risk Management- CPR/AED

Co‑organize and plan with the Associate Director of Facilities CPR/AED classes each semester to ensure all full‑time and student staff are certified.

Maintain and purchase supplies and care of CPR/AED equipment.

Coordinate with local Training American Heart Coordinator

Coordinate training of new full‑time staff in becoming instructor certified within 3 months of hire

Teach certification/recertification CPR/AED courses

5% Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

High School diploma or GED equivalency and five years of related experience OR Bachelor's plus one years related experience.

Minimum one year of programming experience to include supervision, organizational tasks and training, as evidenced by application materials.

Excellent written communication skills as evidenced by the application materials.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in Recreation, Sports Administration, Health/Physical Education, Exercise Science, Higher Education or related field.

Work experience in a university setting, as evidenced in application materials.

Three years of full‑time work experience in campus recreation or a related field.

Experience and skills in Sport Officiating and/or training of officials in at least two of the following sports (or correlating sport): flag football, basketball, soccer, softball, as evidenced in application materials.

Experience in the administration of a comprehensive and equitable size program as KU Intramural Sports program, as evidenced in application materials.

Professional involvement such as presenting or committee work, particularly involvement with organizations such as NIRSA, NRPA, NASPA or ACPA, as evidenced in application materials.

Team oriented and independent to work on multiple tasks, as evidenced in application materials.

Experience with computer applications such as Fusion, When to Work, as evidenced in application materials.

Experience with program budgets and risk management procedures, as evidenced in application materials.

Current CPR/AED certification or willingness to obtain CPR/AED certification within one month of start date.

Certification as an instructor for CPR/AED training (American Heart).

Experience with IMLeagues Technology, as evidenced in application materials.
