Communication Specialist II

This position supports UNC Health's participation in the North Carolina Rural Organizations Orchestrating Transformation for Sustainability (ROOTS) Hub as part of the State's Rural Health Transformation Program. UNC Health has been selected by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) to serve as the NC ROOTS Region 4 Hub Lead, collaborating with community organizations, healthcare providers, and regional partners to improve the health and well-being of rural populations across Region 4 and throughout North Carolina. This role contributes to initiatives that strengthen rural health infrastructure, advance community partnerships, improve access to care, and support sustainable solutions that address the unique needs of rural communities.
In support of these efforts, the Communication Specialist II provides marketing and communications support for UNC Health System and the NC ROOTS Region 4 Hub. Responsibilities include assisting with the development and execution of communication strategies, writing and editing publications and content, developing media and marketing communications materials, supporting public relations activities, and helping implement communications projects that promote program goals, stakeholder engagement, and community awareness. The position may manage independent projects and contribute to larger, cross-functional initiatives that support rural health transformation and community impact.
This position operates in a hybrid work environment and requires regular onsite presence at UNC Health locations. Candidates must be able to work onsite as needed to support meetings, stakeholder engagement, team collaboration, and organizational initiatives. Occasional travel and commuting throughout the NC ROOTS Region 4 service area and across North Carolina may be required to support community partners, regional events, and program activities.
Carries out the plans made for special events such as community health fairs, screenings, etc.
Develops marketing communications including direct mail, direct to customer marketing, customer relationships and database marketing.
Writes and helps photographers, in the preparation of certain publications such as brochures, booklets, alumni materials and employee and special constituent newsletters.
Carries out community relations activities involving education programs, health classes, and business expos and is a liaison with groups such as chambers of commerce, businesses, school systems, etc.
Supports internal communications to staff and medical staff through newsletters, websites, meetings, posters, bulletins, etc.
Supports media relations, by helping with the creation of news releases, responding to media inquiries, assisting in the preparation for news conferences, and supporting web and database media relationships.
Supports public relations which involve aiding in the planning and execution of persuasive campaigns using paid and public media and other channels and assisting with communications during crisis management.
Education Requirements: Bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Public Relations, Marketing, Science or related field. Licensure/Certification Requirements: No licensure or certification required. Professional Experience Requirements: Three (3) year of experience in communications, public relations, marketing or related field. Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements: Strong verbal and written communication skills; strong customer service skills.
