East Carolina University is hiring: Student Employment - Writing Consultants in

East Carolina University · Greenville, NC, USA ·

Job type:
Full Time

Position Title: Student Employment – Writing Consultants
The ECU Department of University Writing Program – University Writing Center – is currently seeking several Writing Consultants. If you are a naturally curious person and like learning from and with people across campus, consider becoming a writing consultant. We welcome applicants from all academic backgrounds. All we require is a willingness to learn and that you have successfully completed ENGL 1100 and 2201.

Work with and learn from writers across disciplines;

Strengthen your own writing and research skills;

Develop transferable skills for any career path.

Writing consultants work 10‑20 hours with ECU students, faculty, and staff to support writers with any type of writing at any point in the writing process through consultation and material development. In addition, consultants answer emails, schedule appointments, and work on professional development projects.

Essential Job Responsibilities

Giving feedback to students, teachers, and staff on any type of writing at any point in the writing process via one‑on‑one writing consultations;

Promoting the UWC;

Responding to the UWC email;

Completing weekly professional development;

Attending weekly staff meetings;

Attending a pre‑semester orientation;

Other duties and professional development as assigned.

Consulting Approach
We employ a facilitative approach in which the writer always retains control over both the form and content of the paper. Consultants guide writers to work on higher‑order concerns such as assignment goals, clear focus, thesis development, organization, audience awareness, and content development. Consultants also possess skills and resources to teach writers how to address lower‑order writing concerns including sentence structure, style, word choice, and punctuation. Consultants may work with writers either in person or online through chat or paper uploads.

Professional Development
During downtime consultants will work on professional development and projects that encourage reflection and further learning about writing center work. Writing center work and projects take precedence over a consultant’s coursework and personal work while they are working.

Minimum Qualifications

Successful completion of English 1100 and 2201 or their equivalents;

2.75 cumulative GPA.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to communicate and work effectively with a broad range of people to maintain good working relationships within the writing center and across campus;

Ability to take initiative and self‑direct learning, while also collaborating with peers and ECU writers.

Relocation Policy
Unless otherwise identified in the applicable job posting and consistent with University policy, the University will principally employ individuals who reside in the State of North Carolina to the greatest extent practicable. As such, most positions at East Carolina University require employees to live and work in North Carolina (or live within a reasonable daily commuting distance from their duty station) after hire. Candidates should be prepared to relocate within a reasonable, agreed‑upon time after an offer of employment has been made and accepted to meet this requirement.
