Director of Video, WBUR Program & Production
Position Type: Full‑time, exempt. Location: Boston, MA. Salary Grade: 52 ($150,400.00–$210,600.00). Reporting to: Chief Content Officer.
Overview
WBUR is launching a new video focus and seeks a leader to build its Video Center of Excellence, set editorial standards, train staff, and craft a multi‑platform distribution strategy. The Director of Video will guide journalists and multimedia producers, run editorial video production, and champion video as a cross‑platform growth lever.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategy & Leadership (20%)
- Develop and execute a multi‑year video strategy aligned to WBUR’s strategic pillars.
- Define the Center’s remit, governance, budget, success metrics and roadmap.
- Partner with Editorial, Product, Engineering, Business Partnerships, Membership and Marketing to integrate video into major projects and campaigns.
- Editorial & Production Oversight (20%)
- Uphold journalistic standards across all video content.
- Edit video scripts, guide editorial decisions and manage end‑to‑end production processes.
- Build production playbooks for studio work, field reporting, vertical video and live events.
- Lead editorial review and quality assurance for both editorial and sponsored content.
- Team Building & Management (20%)
- Lead and train staff and cultivate a vetted roster of freelancers.
- Launch embedded‑producer model across newsroom, digital, national programs, podcast, live events.
- Run training programs to upskill editorial staff and foster a collaborative culture.
- Distribution & Platform Strategy (15%)
- Own channel‑level strategy for YouTube, WBUR.org, social platforms.
- Define platform KPIs, publishing cadence and coordinate cross‑promotion.
- Lead platform relationships and vendor partnerships tied to distribution and monetization.
- Analytics & Impact (10%)
- Define and track KPIs linking video performance to editorial impact, audience growth, and revenue.
- Lead quarterly reviews of video performance trends.
- Run experiments and A/B tests to optimize formats, lengths, posting times and workflows.
- Revenue & Partnerships (10%)
- Collaborate with Business Partnerships to productize video sponsorships.
- Support Membership and Development with bundled video products.
- Identify licensing and syndication opportunities and develop packaged services.
- Operations & Technology (5%)
- Build prioritized roadmap for equipment and facilities; manage procurement within budget.
- Implement efficient workflows for asset management, captioning, transcription and archiving.
Required Skills
- 8+ years of professional experience producing, editing and distributing editorial video content, including at least 3 years in a managerial role.
- Deep editorial judgment and commitment to public media values.
- Hands‑on fluency with video production workflows and editing tools (Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro, After Effects).
- Proven success growing audiences on major video platforms, especially YouTube.
- Experience working with cross‑functional teams to launch sustainable video products.
- Strong people‑management skills, inclusive hiring and talent development.
- Excellent communication skills to explain editorial or technical decisions.
Preferred Skills
- Experience in public media or nonprofit journalism environments.
- Background with live‑stream production and community engagement formats.
- Familiarity with DAM systems, CMS integrations and analytics tools.
