The Seymour Congregational Church is seeking an Interim Director of Music to provide leadership for the church’s music ministry during a transitional period. This is a part-time position focused on supporting worship, coordinating music, and working collaboratively with church staff, choir members, and volunteers.


Position summary


The interim director of music will oversee and lead the music program for Sunday worship and special services, accompany Congregational singing, directing the choir, and help maintain continuity in the life of the church until a permanent candidate is called.


Primary responsibilities


Worship leadership



  • Plan, coordinate and provide music for weekly Sunday worship services.

  • Provide prelude, postlude, hymns, and other service music.

  • Work with the Pastor to select music appropriate to scripture, seasons, and themes.

  • Provide music for special services, such as Christmas Eve, (leading up to Easter) Holy Week, funerals, and weddings as available.


Choir leadership



  • Direct the adult choir and lead regular rehearsals.

  • Select music suited to the choir’s abilities and schedule.

  • Encourage participation and help foster a welcoming, positive choir environment.


Administration



  • Communicate regularly with the Pastor, church office, choir members, and music committee.

  • Submit music selections in a timely manner for worship bulletins.

  • Attend relevant meetings as requested, including music committee and church when appropriate.

  • Help oversee the care and use of musical instruments and music library.


Other responsibilities



  • Arrange for substitute musicians when unavailable.

  • Support guest musicians or soloists as needed.

  • Assist in maintaining continuity and stability during the interim period.


Qualifications



  • Strong piano and/or organ skills

  • Experience leading choirs or Congregational music

  • Ability to collaborate well with clergy, staff, volunteers, and congregation members

  • Strong communication and organizational skills

  • Appreciation for traditional church music and worship life

  • Degree in music or equivalent training/experience preferred


Schedule and compensation



  • Part-time position

  • Weekly Sunday worship attendance required

  • Rehearsal and preparation time as needed

  • Compensation based on experience and qualifications


Accountability



  • The Interim Director of Music reports directly to the Pastor and works in partnership with the church leadership and music committee.
