ACTOR / THEATRICAL INTERPRETER

Founded in 1926, the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is a private, not‑for‑profit educational, historic, and cultural institution that owns and operates one of the United States’ largest living‑history museums.

About the Position
Perform, create, and portray historical figures of 18th‑century Williamsburg in plays, informal interpretations, and 18th‑century play adaptations. Connect themes to the Interpretive Plan, engaging guests with history that illustrates how Williamsburg helped shape a new nation.

Essential Functions

Apply creative and intellectual skills to develop and perform a variety of roles for diverse programming.

Research and analyze primary and secondary sources to gain comprehensive knowledge of 18th‑century Williamsburg and its connection to the Foundation’s Interpretive Pillars of Democracy, Freedom, Ingenuity, Community, and Revolution.

Interpret 18th‑century subjects and ideas through theatrical entertainments, scripted pieces, and/or spontaneous guest engagements.

Prepare, rehearse, and perform assigned acting roles reliably and consistently, ensuring historical and artistic accuracy.

Actively participate as a positive ensemble member to create dynamic, inspiring, and educational experiences for guests and foster a healthy work environment for staff. (May include script writing, editing, directing, music, vocal, etc.)

Perform with positivity, flexibility, and resiliency in a changing work environment.

Collaborate across Colonial Williamsburg departments to enrich programming.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience
Knowledge and skills are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of a four‑year degree from an accredited college or university and two years of professional experience in theatre or related fields.

Required Qualifications

Theatrical training and experience that includes script memorization, multitasking, taking direction, improvisation, and performance before large audiences.

Ability to research and synthesize historical information.

Excellent interpersonal skills.

Fundamental knowledge of American history, usually gained through high school completion with at least two years of professional growth in this medium.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of Colonial and Revolutionary America, including Virginia history.

Experience in historical research.

Specialty performance and theatrical skills such as musical instruments, singing, stage combat, playwriting, directing, choreography, and stage management.

Interpretation, storytelling, teaching, and/or museum experience.

Non‑exempt position eligible for overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act.
