Multimedia Journalist

Reports to:

Executive Director for Communications & Marketing

Pay Grade:

PM 1 @ 226 days

Primary Purpose
Assists the Executive Director for Communications & Marketing and the Communications department in communicating student district success, informing the community about new programs and opportunities for PSJA students, and supporting district-level multimedia and video productions from concept to completion.

Education / Certification
Bachelor’s Degree in Broadcast Journalism or related field

Special Knowledge / Skills

Excellent organization, writing, planning, and creative skills to produce and direct compelling and informative stories

Excellent storytelling and writing skills

Experience writing, proofreading, editing, and desktop publishing

Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos

Ability to perform a variety of tasks, often changing assignments on short notice with little or no direction

Ability to operate standard digital in‑studio and remote equipment including audio, lighting, TriCaster, teleprompter, and more

Familiarity with distributing digital material on web, social media, and television

Experience and training in current videotaping and production techniques

Experience operating DV, HD, DSLR cameras, GoPros, drones, and mobile devices

Experience with nonlinear editing software (e.g., Final Cut Pro, Adobe Creative Suite)

Experience creating computer‑generated graphics and animation (2D/3D)

Experience using character‑generating software and digital servers

Experience producing data‑rich multimedia graphics

Creativity in producing videos that meet PSJA ISD expectations

Knowledge of school district operations and communications (preferred)

Excellent project‑management skills with a track record for on‑time delivery on tight deadlines

Ability to work irregular hours, weekends, and some holidays

Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively across the organization

Experience

A minimum of three (3) years of video storytelling or journalism experience

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Collaborate with the Executive Director for Communications & Marketing and Video Production Manager to develop and execute video content supporting the Communications Department and the district

Develop, write, and edit news packages, segments, and promotional content for broadcast and/or print

Provide creative ideas for video or multimedia elements of communications and marketing plans

Assist with videotaping and editing video and audio content for the Communications Department

Take photographs for district publications, events, presentations, campaigns, and displays as needed

Assist with technical set‑up and production aspects of videotaping, including camera operation, audio/video equipment set‑up, lighting, and set‑design

Pitch and produce new stories and other content to the department

Create graphics or motion graphics for videos and other multimedia projects as needed

Assist in studio and remote shoots as determined by the supervisor

Take a project from concept to completion without assistance

Update the district’s YouTube and Vimeo channels with new videos

Work flexible hours, weekends, and some holidays

Work well with others and maintain professionalism when interacting with staff, other departments, schools, or the community

Perform a variety of tasks on short notice or with minimal direction and meet established deadlines

Serve as a one‑woman/man‑band when necessary (run camera, audio, conduct interviews)

Gather and verify information regarding stories through interviews, observations, and research

Edit engaging long‑form and short‑form content customized for multiple digital and social media platforms

Concept and pitch ideas, and execute the vision of others

Perform other duties as assigned

Mental and Physical Demands
Posture:

Prolonged use of computer; standing to operate a video camera and broadcast equipment for an extended period of time.

Lifting:

Must be able to push, pull, lift, and/or carry at least 50 lbs.

Environment:

May work prolonged or irregular hours; work may require working outside the normal work week.

Mental Demands:

Work with frequent interruptions and maintain emotional control under stress.
