Senior Vice President for University Communications and Marketing
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey seeks a dynamic and visionary leader to serve as its next Senior Vice President for University Communications and Marketing (SVP UCM). The SVP UCM will be the chief brand strategist and reputation architect, responsible for developing and executing a unified communications and marketing strategy across a highly decentralized university system. The role reports to the president and serves as a key member of the senior leadership team.

Overview
The SVP UCM will bring an enterprise‑wide perspective to communications, marketing, and engagement across Rutgers’ multi‑campus system. Responsibilities include building a high‑performing, coordinated communications ecosystem, advancing the university’s digital and media presence, leveraging data and technology, strengthening internal communications, and leading crisis and issues management.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and implement a cohesive, enterprise‑wide brand strategy that aligns with Rutgers’ mission and vision.

Elevate national reputation and visibility through strategic media, digital, and social initiatives.

Build a culture of coordination, collaboration, and trust across decentralized teams.

Lead the integration of central communications with campus- based units and the Rutgers Health system, establishing clear roles and processes.

Design and manage proactive issues management and crisis communication protocols.

Apply data‑driven analytics, digital platforms, and emerging technologies, including AI, to measure impact and refine strategy.

Strengthen internal engagement and institutional affinity by fostering shared identity and traditions, and increasing alumni engagement.

Serve as a trusted advisor to the president and senior leadership on communication, reputation, constituent engagement, and brand strategy.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, business administration, public administration, or a related field.

Minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible senior leadership experience in communications, marketing, public affairs, brand management, reputation management, media relations, or a related field, including leading large, complex organizations and advising executive leadership.

Strategic and visionary leadership, enterprise mindset, and executive presence.

Exceptional storytelling, crisis leadership, political acumen, and collaborative coalition building.

Data‑informed, digitally fluent, and results‑oriented operational capability.

Adaptability, authenticity, and grounding in a public mission.

Advanced degree preferred.

Salary & Benefits
FLSA Assumed Exempt. Minimum salary of $360,000.00. Compensation may be adjusted based on qualifications, experience, and level of responsibility.
