Lighting & Cinematography Consultant Hybrid | W-2 Contract | $60 $90/hr | Location: Playa Vista, CA or New York, NY
Role Snapshot
A leading generative models lab is developing systems capable of relighting scenes, and is seeking a seasoned lighting and cinematography professional to help define evaluation standards and shape how quality is measured. This is a structured, part-time W-2 engagement requiring occasional in-person sessions at either office location.
What You'll Be Doing
- Establish the criteria for what constitutes high-quality scene lighting and illumination spanning both emotional resonance and physical fidelity and identify where current evaluation frameworks fall short
- Curate meaningful benchmarks by sourcing examples that range from technically straightforward to genuinely challenging lighting scenarios
- Identify the most critical failure modes in model output evaluation and help prioritise what matters most to get right
- Define the rubric and reviewer profile used to assess lighting outputs produced by creative systems, shaping the quality bar for human evaluators
- Collaborate closely with an internal research and evaluation team during periodic on-site working sessions in Playa Vista (Los Angeles), CA or New York, NY
Who We're Looking For
- Strong experience in scene lighting, cinematic illumination, and color science within a professional film, VFX, or video game production context
- Demonstrated track record across two or more professional productions or titles; portfolio or credits expected
- Specialisation in one or more of the following disciplines: Lighting Technical Director (TD), 3D Lighting, Look Development, Director of Photography, or Cinematographer
- A meticulous visual eye paired with the ability to translate nuanced lighting observations into clear, precise descriptive language
- Comfortable contributing to evaluation design and quality frameworks, not just execution
