Position Summary
The Broadcast Technology Specialist works under the dual direction of the Broadcast Engineer and the Academic Professional to provide administrative and technical support for the college’s broadcast and video production operations. This hybrid role manages the daily flow of equipment in the Field Equipment Supply Room (FESR) and provides advanced engineering support for the college’s broadcast studios and newsroom.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent and 2 years of related experience.
Physical Demands
Lift and carry audio/video/computer equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
Stack and organize equipment on shelves and racks in studio
ewsroom and equipment storage areas.
Climb ladders to install or perform maintenance on production equipment, including light panels, jibs, cameras, and monitors.
Climb ladders with gear to access top-level press boxes and run cables from high elevations to field-level stands for sporting events and off‑site events.
Crawl behind studio sets, computer desks, and other equipment to perform testing or maintenance.
Descend ladder into basement corridors underneath TV studio
ewsroom to inspect and trace cabling and wiring.
Bend, stoop, and kneel frequently while working in tightly enclosed spaces where equipment and cabling/wiring are installed.
Duties/Responsibilities
Field Equipment Supply Room (FESR) Management
Supervise the day‑to‑day operation of the college’s Field Equipment Supply Room (FESR) and perform the following tasks (30% of time):
Train and supervise student workers who staff the check‑in/check‑out desk, devise with work schedules and instruct workers in FESR policies.
Be available to conduct transactions at the check‑in/check‑out desk during high‑volume periods or when student workers are not available.
Manage support contracts and maintenance records for field equipment.
Make payments for repairs and purchase new equipment following UGA procurement policies; track payments by students for missing or damaged equipment.
Engineering, Infrastructure & Maintenance
Provide technical and operational support for production infrastructure within the TV studios and newsroom (roughly 20% of time):
Maintain infrastructure including routers, cables, frame syncs, signal converters, distribution amplifiers, and intercoms/IFBs.
Handle HD‑SDI and NDI video installations, switchers, audio mixers, and studio lighting.
"Triage" damaged or defective equipment from FESR and newsroom; facilitate repairs in‑house (circuitry) or via off‑site vendors.
Perform deep‑access maintenance, including crawling behind sets and descending into basement corridors to trace cabling.
Production Support (On‑Site & Off‑Site)
Provide technical support for live/recorded broadcast and off‑site events (about 20% of time):
Execute complex equipment setups for sporting events, involving climbing ladders to press boxes and running cables to stands.
Utilize personal vehicle to transport equipment to/from remote production sites.
Assist with the design and implementation of newsroom production practices and workflow.
Assist in the opening and lockup of the studio.
Academic & Instructional Support
Assist college faculty, staff, and students with set‑up and breakdown of production equipment used for classes and extracurricular production activities; instruct in proper operation (10% of time).
Set‑up and breakdown production equipment for classes and extracurricular activities.
Instruct faculty, staff, and students in proper operation of video equipment.
Other Duties As Assigned
Perform other duties as assigned to support the operational needs of the department and the college.
