Program Leader

The Program Leader plans and conducts department activities and events for the After School Education & Safety (ASES) Program at various sites, including but not limited to: parks, schools, recreational facilities and administrative offices. Receives immediate direction from the Recreation Supervisor I/II or designee. No direct supervision of staff is exercised.
This is a part time, extra help position in the Parks & Recreation Department. The Program Leader is distinguished from the Program Aide by the performance and level of more complex and difficult tasks requiring greater independence and judgment in completing assigned programs, specialized programs, projects or activities.
Examples of essential functions include: assisting with the organization, coordination, implementation, and marketing of grant and department programs, events and activities; supervising and instructing less experience recreation personnel; maintaining records and preparing reports as required; conducting and guiding recreational activities such as arts and crafts, science, nature, drama, and sports; maintaining order and assisting in the promotion of and adherence to the department rules, regulations, and policies; performing a variety of reception, clerical and administrative tasks as necessitated by the assignment; implementing program within City and grant requirements; planning, organizing, coordinating, implementing, and participating in age appropriate, engaging, hands-on activities; interacting and stimulating interest while conducting and supervising program activities including, but not limited to sports, STEM, art, SEL, tutoring, social activities; coordinating enrichment activities; monitoring students' whereabouts; and performing other related duties as assigned.
Education and experience which would provide the required knowledge and skill are required. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skill would be: education of minimum age of eighteen (18) years at the time of employment or high school diploma or equivalent; and one (1) year experience working with youth and/or the public preferred.
Depending upon assigned program, project, facility or activity, may be required to possess or obtain a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate and Multi-Media and/or Standard First Aid certificates prior to placement at worksite. Successful completion of the NCLB test or proof of 48 college units.
May be required to attend off-hour meetings. Incumbent may be exposed to weather conditions while performing some duties outdoors. Prior to placement at the worksite, the employee must positively pass a fingerprint check and drug screen.
Mobility to work in a standard office environment, use standard office equipment and attend off-site meetings. On an intermittent basis, sit at a desk for long periods of time; intermittently walk, stand, bend, squat, twist and reach while performing office duties; lift light weights. Manual dexterity to use standard office equipment and supplies and to manipulate both single sheets of paper and large document holders (binders, manuals, etc.); vision to read handwritten and printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and by telephone; may supervise children and be required to kneel, sit in low chairs, or sit on floor for prolonged periods; must be able to sustain posture in a seated position for prolonged periods of time.
Work in an office or field environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Employees may be exposed to inclement weather conditions if working in a field environment. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing department guidelines, policies and procedures.
