The Client Services Assistant will help W. W. Norton and our distributed client publishers bring to market hundreds of titles per year in categories as varied as literary fiction, art, comics, cookbooks, nonfiction, poetry, and children's books. This dynamic and highly collaborative role is unique in that it involves working not with a single publisher, but with all of our distinguished client publishers, which include New Directions, Fantagraphics, Thames & Hudson, Yale University Press, Harvard University Press, Akashic, The Experiment, Abbeville, Tilbury House, and more.
The Assistant is responsible for supporting Norton's Client Services department and facilitating a productive collaboration between Norton and our client publishers. This role involves working with our client publishers and colleagues in multiple departments within W. W. Norton and will enable the successful candidate to learn about many aspects of publishing and selling books. The role is fast paced and requires keen attention to detail, adherence to deadlines, and creative problem-solving.
The Client Services team is looking for someone who can multitask extensively, set priorities and see bigger objectives, and find enjoyment working with many colleagues both internal and external. The Assistant will develop a deep understanding of and ideally a deep appreciation for our client publishers’ distinctive, award-winning, and bestselling books. While the Assistant will mainly support the department’s existing workflows and systems, our team places a high value on autonomous creative, strategic thinking that demonstrates leadership and vision and will help strengthen our department.
The Assistant reports to our Client Services Director and works closely with our Client Services Coordinator.
Professional Responsibilities Include:
- Support the Client Services team by liaising with our client publishers and sales department to ensure that the needs and expectations of our client publishers are met
- Support the Client Services team in all aspects of our client publishers’ title data management
- Draft and share seasonal schedules
- Schedule and attend seasonal launches and sales conference presentations
- Oversee seasonal new title setup in our proprietary title data management system and ensure that title data submissions meet our deadlines and requirements
- Manage seasonal Edelweiss catalogs and ensure that the sales and marketing materials are optimized for sell-in
- Collaborate with our metadata team to troubleshoot and resolve metadata issues as they arise
- Compile and share client publisher title data changes internally
- Collaborate with our sales department to share galleys, digital ARCs, and other sales materials on behalf of our client publishers
- Assist with all aspects of new publisher onboarding
- Maintain our office library of book samples

Experience and Skills:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel
- Aptitude for learning new systems and databases
- Prior publishing, bookselling, or book industry experience preferred
- Employment eligibility to work with W. W. Norton & Company in the U.S. is required
- Must be able to work from Norton’s New York City headquarters. This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule of 3 days in the office and 2 days remote
- Bachelor’s degree
Currently available benefits include:
- Annual compensation for this position is $48,000. All salaries and salary ranges posted by Norton may vary depending on experience, skills, location, and like considerations.
