Job Overview
The Assistant Designer starts their career on the Men's Design Team at Macy’s, engaging in learning the company culture, brand aesthetics, and design principles. This role offers the opportunity to think, dream, and create while working with a supportive design community that values originality, innovation, and teamwork.
What You Will Do
Develop research skills in category, trend, and customer preferences.
Assist the Design Team in aligning with the Menswear Private Brand direction by incorporating materials, trims, silhouettes, colors, and patterns.
Support the execution of a strategic, customer‑centric vision, contributing to overall product strategy and merchandise objectives.
Prepare presentation materials and set up design‑led meetings.
Contribute to in‑season design changes for the department and vendors.
Participate in cross‑functional team meetings, summarizing action points for the manager.
Collaborate closely with the people leader to meet deadlines and prioritize workload expectations.
Create flat mechanical sketches for design development packages.
Help create and distribute tech packages.
Assist in approving strike‑offs, samples, and other development materials.
Use Adobe and CLO programs for style, color, and pattern development.
Review and provide feedback on development samples.
Maintain regular communication with cross‑functional partners throughout the development cycle.
Identify opportunities and develop an assortment.
Show adaptability, a desire to grow within the company, and pursue a career at Macy’s.
Foster an environment of acceptance and respect to strengthen relationships with colleagues, customers, and communities.
Skills You Will Need
Research Skills:
Ability to research category, trend, and customer preferences.
Presentation Skills:
Competence in preparing materials and setting up design‑led meetings.
Cross‑Functional Collaboration:
Strong ability to participate in team meetings, summarize action points, and meet deadlines.
Technical Skills:
Create flat mechanical sketches, use Adobe and CLO programs, and distribute tech packages.
Relationship Building:
Establish and maintain communication with cross‑functional partners.
Adaptability and Learning:
Willingness to learn on the job, identify opportunities, and develop an assortment.
Communication Skills:
Excellent written and verbal communication for effective collaboration.
Technical Proficiency:
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Excel, and Adobe Design programs.
PLM Knowledge:
Working knowledge of Product Lifecycle Management is a plus.
Color and Print Sense:
Strong color sense and ability to view and differentiate the color spectrum.
Who You Are
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in a related field.
Experience in retail or design internships (preferred).
Experience in menswear and/or knits (preferred).
Regularly required to sit, talk, hear, use hands/fingers to touch, handle, and feel.
Occasionally required to move about the workplace, reach with hands and arms, and requires close vision.
Able to work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs.
