The Thriving Initiative is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit serving survivors on college campuses including San Diego State University, UC Santa Barbara, and San Francisco State University. Our programs are survivor-centered, trauma-informed, and grounded in deep respect for community healing.

Position Overview
The Program Coordinator plays a vital role in the day-to-day program operations and community-facing presence of The Thriving Initiative at San Diego State University (SDSU) and in the broader San Diego community. This role will support the planning and execution of events and workshops, build and nurture campus and community partnerships, and serve as an accessible point of contact for students seeking resources and connection. The ideal candidate is organized, empathetic, and passionate about improving the lives of survivors. This role reports to our San Diego Program Manager, Lauren McKenzie.

Key Responsibilities
Program & Event Support

Oversee and implement weekly in-person healing and recovery workshops utilizing diverse alternative forms of healing

Attend weekly staff meetings and a weekly one-on-one meeting with the Program Manager

Work collaboratively with program team to ensure smooth program operations

Attend and support both on-campus and off-campus planned events

Oversee logistics for events and workshops, including ordering and bringing physical workshop materials, setting up venues, and coordinating with service providers before, during, and after each event.

Assist with financial management related to events and workshops, including tracking expenditures and processing orders

Assist with additional projects that are assigned

Student Engagement

Directly coordinate all SDSU volunteer engagement activities and oversight.

Hold regular weekly office hours to provide student volunteers with an accessible, welcoming space to connect, ask questions, and plan activities

Plan and coordinate bonding activities for student officers to build community and team cohesion

Empower the volunteer team to create safe, welcoming spaces where survivors feel seen and supported

Program Outreach

Collaborate with on-campus partners in planning and delivering programming and events

Closely collaborate with Communications and Outreach coordinator to co-lead weekly marketing meetings, ensure proper volunteer engagement, and appropriate content creation

Partnership Development

Cultivate and maintain on-campus partnerships with relevant university departments, student organizations, and offices

Lead occasional local funding request opportunities

Foster and strengthen relationships with community partners to expand The Thriving Initiative’s network of support and resources

Qualifications
Required

Commitment to supporting survivors of interpersonal violence and sexual assault

Prior involvement in advocacy, social justice, mental health, or survivor support work

Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Ability to work collaboratively with volunteers, staff, workshop participants, and community partners

Comfort with basic financial tracking and administrative tasks

Knowledge of San Diego State University clubs, organizations, administration, etc.

Reliable transportation to and from events

Must be able to transport workshop materials to and from program sites in a timely manner, including loading and unloading supplies up to 25 pounds, reasonable accommodations can be made.

Preferred

Experience in event planning, program coordination, or nonprofit work

Experience working with or within campus communities

Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience

Trauma-informed training will be provided, but previous mental health experience is a major plus

Working Conditions
This is a part-time, hybrid position with in-person requirements near San Diego State University campus. Some off-campus travel for events and community partnerships may be required. Hours may occasionally vary around events and workshops
