Job Overview The Social Media Strategist and Content Creator, under general supervision, advances the awareness, visibility, engagement, and public voice of East Texas A&M University through strategic social media planning, content creation, and day‑to‑day management of the university’s primary social media channels. This position is responsible for managing the main @etamu social accounts; planning, creating, and publishing content; supporting real‑time and event‑based storytelling; monitoring engagement and brand mentions; and recommending adjustments based on platform performance and audience response. Working in coordination with the Director of Website Applications Development & Administration Webmaster, this position helps align social media activity with university priorities related to student life, enrollment, engagement, and brand promotion, while also providing guidance and day‑to‑day direction to student workers and campus contributors involved in content creation and social media management.
Duties & Responsibilities Manage the university’s primary @etamu social media accounts and maintain a strategic, consistent, and engaging presence across designated platforms.
Develop and execute social media content plans, calendars, and campaigns that support university priorities related to student experience, enrollment, engagement, events, and brand promotion.
Create, write, edit, capture, and publish social media content, including captions, graphics, photography, short‑form video, stories, and other platform‑appropriate assets.
Lead day‑to‑day social media execution involving student workers and help direct, organize, and maintain the workflow of content creation and publishing activities.
Provide live and near‑live social media coverage for university events, campus activities, student engagement moments, and other high‑visibility opportunities.
Actively manage comments, direct messages, audience engagement, and brand monitoring across primary university channels.
Monitor brand mentions, audience sentiment, platform trends, and content performance, and recommend appropriate responses or adjustments in coordination with university communications leadership.
Collaborate with the Assistant Director of Marketing Analytics and Performance Insights on engagement reporting, audience behavior analysis, and recommendations to strengthen content performance and reach.
Coordinate with campus units and contributors to identify content opportunities, collect information, and support social storytelling tied to academics, student life, faculty achievement, athletics, research, campus culture, and enrollment priorities.
Help develop and maintain content calendars and social media plans for major initiatives, campaigns, events, and seasonal university priorities.
Coordinate with the Director of Website Applications Development & Administration Webmaster on content planning, message alignment, editorial quality, and integration with broader communications priorities.
Support institutional standards, governance practices, and content expectations for unit‑level social contributors across campus and help coach contributors toward stronger, more consistent execution.
Collaborate across Marketing and Communications, including with web, photography, video, enrollment, athletics, and related partners, to coordinate content planning and execution for major priorities.
Support university communications efforts during issues, incidents, or high‑priority moments by assisting with timely digital messaging, coordinated content distribution, and audience‑facing updates as assigned.
Assist in maintaining content workflows, planning tools, and asset organization for social media strategy and execution.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements Education: Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, journalism, public relations, English, digital media, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience / Knowledge / Skills: Three years of related experience in social media, communications, marketing, content creation, digital engagement, or a related field.
Strong writing, editing, visual storytelling, and verbal communication skills.
Knowledge of social media platforms, content strategy, engagement practices, social listening, and platform trends.
Strong interpersonal, planning, and organizational skills.
Ability to create content that is audience‑aware, platform‑appropriate, and aligned with university voice and priorities.
Manage multiple deadlines, work independently, and adjust quickly in a fast‑moving content environment.
Lead day‑to‑day channel execution while coordinating with student workers and campus contributors.
Monitor performance and make practical recommendations based on analytics and audience response.
Build collaborative working relationships across units and help guide contributors toward strong content and social media practices.
Licensing/Professional Certifications: None.
Preferred Education / Skills / Experience Experience in higher education, student‑facing communications, or another mission‑driven organization.
Experience managing flagship or brand‑level social media accounts.
Experience creating photo, video, story, and short‑form content for institutional or brand channels.
Experience leading day‑to‑day social execution involving student workers, interns, or contributors.
Experience using analytics to evaluate content performance and improve engagement.
Experience covering events or producing real‑time social media content in a professional environment.
Experience helping guide contributors in content creation or social media practices.
Supervision of Others May provide day‑to‑day direction, guidance, and workflow coordination for student workers and campus contributors involved in social media content and execution.
