Director, State Government Affairs
Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary representative of Sarepta to public officials in the assigned region, developing and maintaining strategic relationships with state legislators, committee staff, administration staff, regulatory officials, and local jurisdictions.
- Advocate on issues affecting Sarepta and shape a positive policy environment through the implementation of the state government affairs engagement plan.
- Assess the political climate related to rare disease and gene therapy policies and provide policy or mitigation strategies to ensure company goals are achieved.
- Represent and advocate for Sarepta’s interests through active participation on trade association committees and coalitions.
- Develop and maintain a strong network of contacts in the assigned region and among public opinion leaders.
- Collaborate and coordinate with internal teams to develop and execute strategies and related activities.
- Hire and manage external consultants in the region, pending budget approval, to support execution of company goals.
- Build coalitions with third‑party partners, patient advocates, medical professionals, and others as needed.
- Draft memos, educational materials, and presentations detailing the impact of state legislation and policy on the company’s business.
- Work as a highly functioning team player by sharing best practices, communicating relevant insights, leading special projects, and coordinating with team members.
- Support and facilitate interactions with state Medicaid agencies.
- Oversee compliance with state laws and internal ethical requirements related to lobbyist registration, reporting, and political contributions.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 10+ years of current and relevant experience in state government affairs or policy.
- Bachelor’s degree required in a relevant field.
- Thorough understanding of state government, including legislative, regulatory, and political processes.
- Prior experience as a state lobbyist strongly preferred.
- Experience in the healthcare sector or related industry, with particular knowledge of rare disease therapies and reimbursement policies.
- Demonstrated ability to build and sustain relationships with elected officials and their staffs, as well as other government and non‑governmental policy leaders.
- Confirmed ability to write and edit legislative language and influence state legislation and regulations to achieve corporate goals.
- Innovative thinker with effective written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
- A high level of energy and passion toward patients, science, and good policy.
- Proven teamwork and collaboration skills, with the ability to work with colleagues, trade associations, patient advocates, and influential policy organizations.
- Attention to detail and the ability to recognize issues within the context of higher‑level policies and regulations.
- Self‑initiating, well‑organized, and capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously and independently.
- Willingness to travel up to 40% domestically within the assigned region.
Compensation and Benefits
The targeted salary range for this position is $185,600 - $232,000 per year.
This position is hybrid; you will be expected to work on site at one of Sarepta’s facilities in the United States and/or attend company‑sponsored in‑person events from time to time.
