Title: Director of Sales Marketing (Channel Testing + Sales Diversification)
Location: In-office or Remote (US-based) + occasional travel optional
Job Type: Contract + Commission
Overview
Vara Safety is looking for a Director of Sales Marketing to help us diversify customer acquisition beyond Meta/Google. This is a contract role built for someone who loves running small, measurable marketing experiments to capture sales and scaling what works.
We’re taking a diverse testing approach: many small bets (often $1k–$3k tests) instead of big upfront commitments. You’ll own the experiment pipeline end-to-end: sourcing opportunities, negotiating placements, launching tests, measuring results, and recommending what to scale or stop.
What you’ll do
- Build and run a repeatable channel testing system (idea backlog → test brief → launch→ measurement → scale/iterate/stop)
- Launch and manage diversification tests across channels like:
- Podcasts (host-read ads, guest spots, affiliate codes)
- Newsletters (sponsorship buys, list partnerships; some can be $5k–$10k/quarter with approval)
- Print (small print runs, magazine placements, flyers in aligned locations)
- AI SEO / content engine experiments (coordination with our AI partner)
- Coordinate vendors and placements: outreach, negotiation, scheduling, creative requirements, and invoicing coordination
- Set up tracking for every test (UTMs, unique codes, landing pages, call tracking if needed)
- Report weekly on spend vs plan, results vs goals, and clear next actions
What success looks like (60–90 days):
- A experiment pipeline testing various marketing and sales channels
- 4–8 small tests launched with clear measurement
- 1–2 channels showing traction, with a scaling plan and a stop list for what didn’t work
- Detailed reports correlating each test to outcomes (leads, CAC, revenue, or proxy metrics)
Requirements
- True marketing generalist with a bias toward shipping and measuring.
- Experience running scrappy channel tests with limited budget and clear ROI thinking.
- Comfortable with outreach and negotiation (sponsors, podcast hosts, newsletter owners, print vendors).
- Strong project management and follow-up discipline.
- Great judgment: knows when “good enough to test” beats perfection.
Nice-to-haves
- Familiarity with firearms/outdoor industry audiences and compliance sensitivities.
- Direct response mindset (offers, landing pages, conversion rate, attribution).
Contract details
- 10–15 hours/week to start, contract-bases
- Pay range: $2,500–$5,000/month ($65-$95/hourly rate based on experience)
- Commission-based performance incentives
