Job Summary
KUER , Utah’s NPR affiliate, is seeking a producer for RadioWest, our public affairs and interview program. RadioWest explores the issues, ideas, and stories shaping Utah and the wider world through thoughtful conversations with newsmakers, scholars, writers, artists, and community voices.
The producer plays a central role in shaping the editorial direction of the program. We’re looking for a journalist with strong news judgment, intellectual curiosity, and a passion for telling stories. The ideal candidate is an excellent researcher and writer, a creative thinker, and a collaborative producer who can help develop and execute engaging, meaningful conversations.
RadioWest is not just a news program. We are also interested in ideas, scholarship, culture, history, literature, science, and the broader questions that shape public life. The successful candidate will be equally energized by breaking news and deeper explorations of culture, history, science, and public life and will be able to identify conversations that help listeners better understand the world around them.
Responsibilities
Developing original show ideas and enterprise reporting projects.
Reviewing audience metrics and analytics to help inform editorial decisions and identify opportunities for growth.
Participating in editorial discussions and helping evaluate program content for journalistic quality, relevance, and audience interest.
Researching topics and helping define the editorial focus and scope of each program.
Identifying, vetting, booking, and preparing guests for interviews.
Communicating professionally with publicists, agents, academics, government officials, authors, and other sources.
Conducting pre-interviews and background research to help shape on-air conversations.
Writing show descriptions, web copy, promotional materials, and other editorial content.
Editing audio for broadcast, podcast, and digital distribution.
Publishing and maintaining content on the

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Broadcasting, or a related field, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); one year of previous professional experience in the news field; demonstrated oral and written communications skills; and an understanding of Public Radio and radio broadcasting required. Production skills are needed to edit and rerecord final story formats.
Department Specific Qualifications:
Three-to-five years demonstrated experience in journalism, public media, audio production, or a related field.
Excellent writing, reporting, and research skills.
Strong editorial judgment and the ability to identify compelling stories, conversations, and emerging ideas.
Familiarity with audience analytics and an interest in using data to inform editorial strategy.
A broad curiosity about current affairs, history, culture, science, literature, and public life.
Experience booking guests and working with a wide range of sources and stakeholders.
Ability to conduct effective pre-interviews and synthesize complex information.
Audio editing experience and familiarity with digital audio production workflows.
Comfort working with content management systems, websites, and social media platforms.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
A collaborative spirit and enthusiasm for public service journalism.
