Position Overview
We are seeking a motivated and passionate Junior Jazz Band Director to lead and inspire our Junior Jazz Band program. This stipend-based role is ideal for an individual who enjoys working with young musicians and has a strong background in jazz performance and education.
Key Responsibilities
Plan and conduct engaging weekly rehearsals.
Develop students’ jazz performance skills, ensemble playing, and musicality.
Select appropriate repertoire for performances.
Foster a positive, inclusive, and educational rehearsal environment.
Ensure student safety before, during, and after rehearsals.
Collaborate with music department staff and event coordinators as needed.
Qualifications
Experience directing jazz ensembles or similar music groups.
Strong knowledge of jazz styles, techniques, and repertoire.
Experience working with student musicians (preferred).
Excellent communication and organizational skills.
Commitment to consistent attendance and preparation.
Time Commitment
Approximately 80-90 hours of work from October through April.
Performance Responsibilities
The Junior Jazz Band Director will prepare students for and oversee participation in the following events:
Holiday Pops Concert (December)
Massachusetts Association for Jazz Education (MAJE) Festival (February/March)
All-City Jazz Concert (April)
