Public Relations/External Communications Manager
The Public Relations/External Communications Manager supports Transamerica and its business units and drives external communications, with a focus on media relations, reputation building, and storytelling. This role develops content, executes media relations activities, and helps shape the organization's public narrative to engage external audiences, build market credibility, and advance brand reputation.

Responsibilities

Develop and execute media and external storytelling strategies that support business growth and reputation objectives.

Identify and elevate business stories that strengthen brand credibility, market leadership, and thought leadership visibility.

Shape executive visibility strategies through media engagement, speaking opportunities, and strategic commentary.

Monitor daily media coverage and industry news; track, summarize, and flag relevant mentions, trends, and emerging issues.

Support earned media efforts by maintaining media lists, organizing press materials, and assisting with announcements and launches.

Develop media responses, background materials, and FAQs for proactive and reactive communications.

Manage end-to-end public relations (PR) workflows, including intake, timelines, approvals, and stakeholder coordination.

Draft, edit, and finalize high-quality communications, including newsroom content, press materials, and briefing documents, ensuring alignment with Associated Press (AP) style and brand standards.

Partner with Marketing, Internal Communications, Legal, Compliance, and other functions to ensure consistent enterprise messaging and alignment across channels.

Apply communications insights to influence business planning and translate complex concepts into clear external narratives.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, public relations, or related field, or equivalent experience

Eight years of experience in public relations or corporate communications

Experience supporting complex business lines, products, or enterprise initiatives through strategic communications

Experience advising senior executives in high-visibility or high-stakes environments

Exceptional writing, storytelling, and messaging skills

Knowledge of Associated Press (AP) style

Ability to operate effectively within a matrixed organization

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in insurance or financial services industry

Experience supporting business transformation or growth initiatives

Experience in crisis communications and reputation risk management

Experience working in both agency and in-house communications environments

Knowledge of media ecosystems within regulated industries

Working Conditions

Hybrid Office or Remote environment

Occasional travel

Compensation
The Salary for this position generally ranges between $90,000 - $115,000 annually. Please note that the salary range is a good faith estimate for this position and actual starting pay is determined by several factors including qualifications, experience, geography, work location designation (in-office, hybrid, remote) and operational needs. Salary may vary above and below the stated amounts, as permitted by applicable law.

Additionally, this position is typically eligible for an Annual Bonus based on the Company Bonus Plan/Individual Performance and is at the Company's discretion.
