Job Summary
Responsible for copywriting, editing, and distributing written materials for internal and external communications of the College of Engineering, including scientific press releases, print and electronic advertisements, news releases, social media messages, and communications on behalf of the dean and other UCSB administrators or faculty.

Key Responsibilities

Develop written communication for the College of Engineering, including press releases, magazines, newsletters, website content, and other written collateral.

Serve as primary copy editor, reviewing and editing written and designed materials, and driving key messages across College communications.

Identify press interest and hot topics, develop content, and support the Marketing and Publications Director in story‑telling.

Coordinate with UCSB Public Information Office on articles and press meetings.

Determine publication schedules and outline content for printed or emailed newsletters and magazines.

Write articles using interviewing, reporting and research techniques, ensuring clear, accurate, and concise content for a lay audience.

Edit and rewrite assigned articles, ensuring style and tone conform to Convergence's guidelines.

Produce web content, brochures, social media material, and other marketing materials for the College.

Support the Marketing and Publications team with strategy and content development for other departments and units.

Job Functions And Percentages Of Time

50% Communications and Press Releases – Developing written communication, press releases, magazines, newsletters, and related collateral.

35% Editor, Newsletters and Magazines – Determining publication schedule, writing and editing content, and conducting reader surveys.

10% Copy Writing, Web and Social Media Content – Writing and editing web content, brochures, newsletters, and coordinating social media production.

5% Other – Performing assigned special tasks and supporting marketing strategy.

Qualifications

Required: BS/BA in journalism, communication, marketing, or related field; 4–6 years of experience in written communication or public relations; 1–3 years of scientific writing experience for a lay audience; 1–3 years experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, FileMaker Pro, PowerPoint).

Preferred: Excellent oral and written communication skills; copywriting and editing expertise; polished presentation and interpersonal skills; creative problem‑solving; understanding of communication and marketing strategy; strong interpersonal skills; passion for storytelling in engineering and sciences; experience scheduling and producing large‑scale printed materials such as a magazine.

Special Conditions Of Employment

Occasional evening and weekend work hours.

Satisfactory criminal history background check required.
