Overview
The Technical Director will collaborate closely with department colleagues to design, create, and execute all technical aspects of theatre productions, music and dance concerts, and other Fine Arts events. Responsibilities include managing theatre spaces and equipment, mentoring students, and fostering a collaborative backstage environment.

The position averages 28 hours per week during the academic year, varying from 20 to 40–50 hours depending on the production calendar. Additional work includes audiovisual support and setup for scheduled events and participation in an annual Summer Stock Camp held June 8:30 AM–3:30 PM (2 weeks), with a performance at 7 PM on the final day.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Design and Production

Set construction and scenic painting

Properties

Lighting design and execution (dance lighting experience preferred)

Sound design and reinforcement

Costumes

Projections, puppetry, and other special effects as needed per show

Supervise and mentor student technical theatre program; ensure development of design, construction, and backstage skills

Align all technical elements with the director’s artistic vision and safety standards, maintaining budget guidelines

Collaborate closely with Department Chair, Theatre Producer/Director, and Music/Dance teachers to coordinate technical needs

Work with parent volunteers while supporting student‑led technical work and ensuring a safe, inclusive learning environment

Recruit, train, and mentor student tech crew members, including student heads and designers

Potential for teaching a semester‑long Technical Theatre course or related courses (e.g., Photography, Film, Digital Audio)

Maintain and organize theatre spaces: scene shop, costume loft, technical booth, storage for lighting, sound, props, and scenery

Oversee equipment maintenance and safety for lighting, sound, and rigging systems

Recommend and pursue necessary equipment and facility upgrades with the Director of Facilities

Provide technical support for school events requiring audiovisual setup during pre‑scheduled hours

Coordinate with Fine Arts faculty for upkeep of theatre spaces and equipment across the yearly calendar

Collaborate with facilities team and external vendors for equipment rentals, installations, or specialized repairs

Present for all major production dates: two theatre productions, two dance concerts, two music concerts, the fine‑arts awards gala, and the honor society induction ceremony

Develop after‑school tech crew schedule in partnership with Department Chair and Theatre Director

Lead full set construction, painting, technical rehearsals, performances, and strike processes

Qualifications and Skills

Education

Bachelor’s degree required

BA/BFA or Master’s in Theatre, Technical Theatre, or related field preferred; candidates with other degrees and significant professional experience encouraged

Experience

Several years’ technical theatre experience, with design and production expertise in at least two of: scenery, lighting, sound, costumes

Experience working with high‑school students or young technicians

Dance lighting experience a plus

Technical Skills

Proficiency with power tools and stage carpentry

Strong knowledge of lighting design (Etc., Ion consoles, moving lights, LEDs, DMX)

Sound design and operation experience (digital soundboard, wireless mics, QLab, audio editing)

Familiarity with rigging, projections, and video editing software a plus

Ability to procure rental materials and use hardware stores as needed

Typical Physical Demands

Lifting up to 50 lbs, working at heights, standing, walking, crouching, climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, working in tight spaces

Worked in varied environments

Extended focus on detailed tasks; occasional evenings and weekends
