Job Overview

The Senate Radio‑Television Correspondents Gallery Deputy Director assists in managing press operations and office staff that serve as Senate liaisons to electronic news‑gathering reporters. Responsibilities include overseeing the staff of the Gallery, distributing press credentials, scheduling staff, responding to reporters' inquiries regarding news event coverage and legislative activities, and performing general office administrative tasks. The Deputy Director serves as a resource for Senate staff, officials, broadcast journalists, and other stakeholders, coordinating press coverage of special events, news conferences, Senate committee hearings, and other news events.

Key Accountabilities / Essential Job Duties

  • Provides leadership and directly oversees daily operation; trains, supervises, and evaluates gallery staff.
  • Discusses and resolves media coverage, credentialing, and pooling issues.
  • Advises gallery members on Senate (and House, where applicable) operations such as scheduling, floor procedure, committee structure and jurisdiction, and parliamentary procedure.
  • Assists with planning, organizing, coordinating, and implementing media arrangements for quadrennial presidential nominating conventions, presidential inaugurations, presidential debates, State of the Union addresses and other joint sessions of Congress or special events.
  • Works with all Media Galleries, Doorkeepers, and Capitol Police to ensure safe working environment for press and media attendees.
  • Coordinates assignments to press conferences.
  • Reviews membership applications, contacts directors, editors, and publishers of new applying organizations, prepares written evaluations, and makes recommendations to the Media Gallery Director.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Job Specifications

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s degree.

Required Work Experience

  • Five to eight years related experience.

Required Special Skills / Knowledge

  • Proficiency in key areas relevant to the role; may be assessed during hiring process.
  • Knowledge of current political events and Senate and/or House parliamentary procedure.
  • Ability to provide accurate responses to media inquiries.
  • Ability to coordinate and facilitate the logistics of media events.
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare summaries of events.
  • Ability to direct, supervise, and evaluate gallery staff.
  • Effective communication skills.

Desired Qualifications

  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience in or understanding of media relations, including working with journalists and news organizations.
  • Background in journalism, communications, or a related field is preferred.

Working Conditions

  • Sedentary; may require long hours and periods of standing.
  • Requires onsite presence when the Senate is in session; may need availability during inclement weather, holidays, late night, overnight, and weekend sessions.

Conditions of Employment

Eligibility requirements: U.S. citizen; lawful permanent resident; or qualified as a U.S. national. Employment contingent on background security investigation results.
