Job Overview
The Penn State Athletics Strategic Communications & Social Media Department is seeking highly motivated prospective and current Penn State students to gain experience in athletics media relations, communications, public relations, social media, and content capture and generation.

Responsibilities
A Student Assistant will work events across all 31 Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics programs, performing tasks such as recording statistics, assisting the media, transcribing post‑game press conferences, and managing team‑specific and departmental social media accounts. Additional responsibilities include research projects, writing feature stories and press releases for GoPSUsports.com, attending team practices to capture student‑athlete‑centric content, and telling the story of Nittany Lion student‑athletes through written, digital, and social media communication.

Levels
Level One | Strategic Communications
Provide event support and week‑to‑week assistance to a member of the full‑time staff. Duties include statistical support during events; capturing in‑game video or photograph content; assisting the media; transcribing and editing weekly or post‑game press conferences; assisting on research projects; attending practices to capture student‑athlete‑centric social media content; and other duties as assigned.

Level One | Social Media
Provide event support and week‑to‑week office assistance to a member of the full‑time staff. Duties include capturing photographs and videos at home athletics events; editing, organizing, and properly tagging photographs and videos; attending select special events outside of intercollegiate contests to provide social media support; and other duties as assigned.

Level Two | Strategic Communications
Act as the primary communications officer for one of five to six programs, with full‑time oversight from a staff member. Duties include generating feature content, photo, video, and other unique coverage for GoPSUsports.com and team social channels; producing online team record books, news releases, and feature stories; responding to media requests; facilitating social media; staffing home events and providing remote coverage of away events; supervising other event support personnel. Requires knowledge of Microsoft Word, Adobe Creative Suite, Associated Press style, and extensive social media content generation and digital strategy.

Qualifications
Students with strong written and verbal communication skills, dependability, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team are encouraged to apply. Preferred skills include familiarity with Microsoft Word, Adobe Creative Suite, Associated Press style, and multiple social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and X. Prior experience in photography, videography, graphic design, and editing is preferred but not required.
