Job Summary
The Department of Chemistry is looking for a part–time SEM Manager to manage and maintain the Scanning Electron Microscope. The position is responsible for a facility that serves a diverse group of researchers across the department and involves instrument operation and maintenance, expert technical guidance, training, and partnership with faculty, staff, and students.
Responsibilities
- Conduct maintenance of the SEM/EDS system and sputter coater, including replacing nitrogen tanks, refilling consumables, cleaning water filters, and maintaining the SEM vacuum pumps.
- Train and authorize new users, maintaining an up‑to‑date SEM user list and communicating with users when issues arise.
- Troubleshoot user problems (technical, software, measurement conditions, sample preparation) and diagnose issues, coordinating technical services as needed.
- Manage and coordinate service contracts and purchase new equipment, parts, accessories, and service contracts related to the SEM/EDS system and sputter coater.
- Help users obtain high‑quality data by providing technical support, software assistance, and guidance on measurement conditions and sample preparation.
- Submit monthly statements of user hours/fees to department administration and facilitate monthly billing.
- Assemble data and provide input for reports on design status and technical research for professional organizations, sponsors, and review boards.
- Design, plan, and perform preventative and reactive maintenance on equipment to ensure optimal and safe operation.
- Assist with the preparation of grant proposals and applicable documentation.
- Support project planning, coordination, and troubleshooting efforts to define and resolve problems.
- Answer questions and provide technical information regarding instrumentation to staff, researchers, clients, and students.
- Investigate new research processes and technology solutions in collaboration with research/clinical staff, students, and clients.
- Lead the operations and/or management of the facility.
- Develop, integrate, test, modify, and potentially design sophisticated scientific equipment to support research/clinical initiatives and unit directives.
- Provide technical expertise in the installation and use of equipment and instruments, exercising discretion and independent judgment to meet unit goals.
- Facilitate the billing process.
Qualifications
- Extensive experience using SEM/EDS.
- Strong organization, collaboration, and communication skills.
- Excellent problem‑solving capabilities.
Education
PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering, or related fields is required by the start of the appointment.
Compensation
The expected salary range for this position is $69,000 - $79,000. This is a part‑time (33%) position, so actual pay will depend on the appointment percentage, experience, and qualifications.
Benefits
Benefits eligibility for this position will be based on the total percentage of all active appointments at UW‑Madison held by the selected candidate.
