Why does the job exist?
The Tax Advocate helps Taxpayers navigate through complex to unresolved tax problems. They act as liaison between the Taxpayer and the Department. This position will ensure taxpayer rights are protected, identifies systemic issues and provides guidance or education to taxpayers on processes, laws or deadlines.

The citizens of New Mexico and the Taxation & Revenue Department.
Ideal Candidate
Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field of study from an accredited college or university and six (6) years of professional level experience with a tactical impact directly related to the purpose of the position defined by the agency at the time of recruitment. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling ten (10) years may substitute for the required education and experience including but not limited to
the following experience:
Experience in performing actions related to constituent services.
Advising and assisting management with procedures, controls, third-party assurance, and monitoring activities.
Developing and implementing effective policies and practices related to constituent services.
Managing deadlines and projects using project management tools.
Experience working in state government, revenue administration, regulatory compliance, or tax policy.
Familiarity with IRS Pub. 1075, data privacy policies, or process improvement techniques.
Professional certifications such as CRMA, CISA, CFE, CPA, or PMP.
Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field of study from an accredited college or university and four (4) years of professional level experience with a tactical impact directly related to the purpose of the position defined by the agency at the time of recruitment. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment. Must be current with all tax reporting/payment. Employment is subject to post offer pre-employment criminal background check to include fingerprint checks and is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required.
Bargaining Unit Position
This position is not covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
