Purpose
The Maine Educational Data Management team, located in the Commissioner's Office within the Department of Education, collects and analyzes school administrative units’ school, staff, and student data to meet State and Federal reporting requirements. This section ensures data quality and timeliness, directly influencing State and Federal funding for Maine’s schools and the Department of Education’s policy and funding decisions.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of education programs, policies, and State and federal data requirements.
Knowledge of data collection methods, procedures, and quality standards.
Knowledge of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and related regulations.
Ability to advise on continuous improvement of education data systems and quality data system standards.
Ability to evaluate operating procedures and implement necessary changes.
Knowledge of school operations relative to data collection and recording methods.
Ability to perform data quality checks for completeness, accuracy, and validity.
Ability to perform direct database manipulations to correct errors and update data.
Experience in customer service and effective communication of complex information to system users.
Ability to identify and collaborate with education program data stewards.
Ability to communicate database issues with systems analysts and other technology professionals.
Ability to develop and execute contracts and serve as contract administrator.
Experience with MS‑SQL databases, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Access.
Experience responding to requests for educational data training and assistance with data sets.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum of five (5) years of professional‑level experience in the management of educational data collection, analysis, and reporting systems.
Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Information Technology, Business Management, or a related specialty area.
Preference for candidates with experience using databases and computer systems common to State government and school units.
Strong understanding of education data requirements.
Excellent communication skills for interacting with both technical and non‑technical audiences.
