The School of Dance aims to identify and prepare young, talented dancers for professional performing careers. Our rigorous and nurturing conservatory approach develops technically sound, artistically sensitive, and stylistically versatile dancer‑artists. Distinguished full‑time faculty work closely with students and share their professional expertise through a comprehensive curriculum. Visiting guest artists, choreographers, and company residencies bring fresh perspectives on current trends. The School of Dance offers regular performance opportunities and is committed to presenting world‑class repertory in our concerts.
Job Responsibilities
Provide live musical accompaniment for all dance classes (ballet and contemporary, strongly preferred) for approximately 25 hours per week over the school year. Provide music for technique classes, rehearsals, performances, and auditions. Select and/or compose and improvise appropriate music for these settings. Play piano and/or percussion. Perform Five additional hours per week of duties as determined by the musician and supervisor, such as rehearsal, learning repertoire, playing for the NC Festival of Dance, research and special projects, composing or performing for SOD performances, or other special projects for the school.
Work schedule: Monday – Friday, hourly schedule will vary. A valid NC driver’s license is a condition of employment.
Minimum Qualifications
Formal study and/or special study in the assigned performing art sufficient to demonstrate technical and artistic skills in music theory, composition, sight‑reading, arranging, and improvisation; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Professional‑level piano or percussion facility and classical technique. Extensive background accompanying ballet and contemporary dance. Competence in sight‑reading, arranging, and improvisation.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to play for technique classes, rehearsals, performances, and auditions.
Ability to select and/or compose or improvise appropriate music for these settings.
Ability to play piano and/or percussion.
Ability to establish effective and professional relationships with instructors, students, and staff.
