Director, Special Assets

Capital One is seeking a Director-level workout officer to provide leadership and loan workout expertise for a portfolio of distressed Middle Market Banking loans across sectors such as Food and Beverage, Healthcare, TMT, Industrials, Services, and Government Contracting. The portfolio includes leveraged loans and private‑equity backed borrowers.
Responsibilities

Independently manage a portfolio of criticized and distressed commercial loans, with a focus on risk management and loss mitigation.
Determine strategies to maximize recoveries, evaluate client relationships, and present updates on deal strategy and progress to senior leadership.
Leverage deep credit and structure expertise to evaluate workout options, engage legal counsel, and assess pros and cons of options.
Quintessentially manage the workout process internally and externally, leveraging senior and legal resources.
Develop and communicate overall workout strategies based on multiple outcome scenarios.
Evaluate external recommendations for amendments or restructuring and identify and recommend solutions.
Lead clear, autonomous communication to leadership, customers, and stakeholders, including negotiation of restructurings.
Lead complex portfolio accounts independently, mentor junior team members, and serve as project lead on cross‑team initiatives.
Prepare financial analysis, build bespoke models and scenarios, conduct sensitivity analysis, and implement insights in decision making.
Lead and direct the full loan impairment process, including analysis review and internal communication.
Oversee the Watch and Criticized (WAC) process and establish restructuring action plans.
Identify and recommend improvements to covenant packages, risk ratings, and credit approval memos.
Serve as a subject‑matter expert and provide input to partners across the organization.
Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements while striving for optimal loss protection.
Negotiate and contract with external professionals (attorneys, appraisers, brokers, etc.) to secure best cost/benefit outcomes.
Lead process improvements and implement best‑in‑class solutions to drive quality and productivity.
Create a culture of sharing lessons learned within Special Assets and the origination functions.
Benchmark performance against industry best practices and act as consulting credit officer and risk management specialist.
Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent military experience.
Minimum 7 years of relevant commercial loan experience in credit, asset management, or workout roles.
Minimum 5 years of loan underwriting or loan restructuring experience.
Strong written and verbal communication and financial analytical skills.
Preferred: Master’s degree or Juris Doctorate; at least 10 years of commercial lending experience with direct loan restructuring exposure.

Salary ranges by location:
- McLean, VA: $230,400 – $263,000
- New York, NY: $251,400 – $286,900
